Hi Beetroot,

Don't know what kind of thing you're after, but if it's natural beauty as opposed to historic towns then I'd recommend a journey down the Gorges de l'Ardeche, which although can get busy at this time of year are pretty breathtaking - similar scale to the Gorges du Verdon near where you are now. It's maybe a little out of your way.

Just beyond that further West are the Tarn/Cevennes areas, also beautiful and a lot quieter. Endless forested valleys and rivers to swim in, the odd small village to stay in.

Avignon and Montpellier are great towns/Cities to see if you dont know them - very cooling old streets to walk around and shady squares to sit and eat/drink.

I think all my suggestions are probably further East than you hoped! Otherwise genuinely in Languedoc area is Carcassone - although touristy and busy, still quite an amazing old medieval walled town. Easy-ish to head South into the lower pyrenees from there too.

Best I could do - sorry if you know all these places or they dont suit! I felt bad nobody was answering your pleas!

Sorry also just saw your mention of Beziers - I don't know it, but Sete near there is quite a nice small seaside port/town with long beaches nearby, and a famous graveyard perched on the hillside looking out to sea.
