What do YOU pack?

For the first time in years we're going away for a fortnight, with no access to laundry facilities,so we're having to take more than we usually do.

What do YOU pack for a fortnight's holiday for you and your children?

It depends on our baggage allowance. I always take a small amount of washing powder so that I can handwash clothes in the sink as a complete last resort though.

I would take a mixture of clothes that can be layered.

The problem is I don't really think about it until I start packing when I chuck it in the case so not much help. I figure that if the worst came to the worst I could probably find somewhere to buy some reasonable extra clothes or wash some.

moondog · 27/07/2006 20:16

If it doesn't all fit into one bag for four of us(and this is for six weeks in Turkey) it doesn't come.
I never assume people are looking at me nad mine yet manage to look presentable.
Too much stuff is quite literally a drag....

curiosity · 27/07/2006 21:02

Lol Malory, we spend some time around the pool, but never all day every day.

Ah but Moondog, you will have laundry facilities of some description during your six weeks? I'm quite used to minimalist holiday packing, but we've usually got access to a washing machine if and when required.

We'll be taking almost everything with us. Lots of shorts and T-shirts for the boys, loads of cropped trousers and tops for me, DH's clothes, nappies, wipes, care mats (for DS1's bed as he's only just started being dry), all our toiletries..........even taking a pack of 4 toilet rolls!

curiosity · 27/07/2006 21:19

Lol, don't think we'll be needing toilet rolls this time.

towels are a bugger ,too, take up so much space, then there's cot linen, potty and coolbag/picnic stuff...the list is scarily long. never did quite grasp the packing light thing. am more likely to get a 'heavy' warning sticker slapped on my case at check in. we're so worried about baggage we've just upgraded the hire car!. still dd2 is now 2 so thats another 2o kilos allowance. hurray!

curiosity · 27/07/2006 21:31

Oh I remember nappies and stuff. No long required here thankfully.

blimey moondog..what's your secret? do you have your own place with most of what you need already there?

moondog · 28/07/2006 08:53

Noonar,I admit that we have a flat there but.....I would still take hardly anything even if we didn't.
I think my 2 year old ds will have about three pairs of shorts and a pair of trousers which will do him.FGS how dirty can a pair of navy shorts get? If they were disgraceful, would swill 'em through in the sink.

We went to Thailand with dd for a month when she was 14 months with one backpack and a pushchair for the three of us.
The check in agent was staggered.

Don't forget also that baggage allowance is paltry.

Raggydoll · 28/07/2006 08:58

moondog - 3 of us are going away for 4 days on sunday and taking tons more than that??? basically if my estate boot is not full to capacity i will be wondering what we've forgotton!!

moondog · 28/07/2006 09:00

lol RD.
But what is the fun in that??
I have been scrutininsing campers closely recently (esp. as so many fans on MN) and i can't believe how much stuff some of them bring with them.
Collapsible washing lines,washbowl stands,the works.

Raggydoll · 28/07/2006 09:05

i admit its NO fun packing - maybe i will try to downsize this year - afterall we are staying with a friend who has kids the same age so they should have all the equipment lol!

moondog · 28/07/2006 09:07

Oh yes.
Borrow and cadge shamelssly.
It's environmentally friendly,remind yourself!

noonar · 28/07/2006 09:20

i wish i could be more like you, MD- we're off to greece on sunday and are taking enough toiletries, first aid stuff to open a branch of Boots!

also, would be way too anxious to travel anywhere like thailand with littleones. god, i'm so unadventurous i bore myself sometimes. had a gap year in india planned and i couldnt even see that through!
good for you all you adventurous travellers!

moondog · 28/07/2006 09:23

Noonar, you have to relax and realise that people have children everywhere!
I would argue that my children are safer in Turkey than they are in the UK (lunatic Turk and Kurdish drivers aside.)

Last time I was in Turkey, met mad hippy German (in a volcano crater) driving a tractor to Afghanistan with his wife and kid!!!

mrsbang · 28/07/2006 20:54

I'm quite good at cutting right back on what we need to take on holiday, but this year we're going on a cruise, so I'm taking loads, providing I can find some new clothes to take.
