Family holiday in May - teenager and baby!

We're at a bit of a loss about what to do for our holiday this year and hope you can help!

We are (or will be) me, DH, DS14 and a 6/7 month old DD, and want to go away either during the Easter holidays or May half term.

We're equally happy with a resort or city break, but we would like things to do - either places to visit or activities.

Our thoughts were Rome or maybe Sorrento (so we could visit Pompei) but costing it up it looks like £3000 for a week half board or £1500+ just for travel and accommodation for a city break.

We're stuck! Please help! Any ideas will be gratefully received.

I'm not sure of our budget ... We want something nice but not luxury. We've never done this kind of holiday as we've always visited family abroad for our holidays before. I don't even know how much we should expect to pay!

We can fly from Manchester or Leeds Bradford.

TIA

How about Paris for sightseeing and A day at Disney? Rome or Barcelona would also work well. You could have some time on the beach at Barcelona if the weather is good and perhaps see the football stadium if your son is into footie. There is lots to see there.
If you do visit Pompeii then try and take a baby carrier as I think it would be hard to push a pram there.

Book it independantly, you will save loads of money that way. Flights to Italy are not expensive and you could book an apartment with Owners Direct or Holiday Lettings.

Last May I took DS (15) for a short break to Calella.

Jet 2 flights from Leeds Bradford- I think were about £220 for the pair of us.

I booked half board in a hotel in Calella - which is up the coast - on the train line from Barcelona.

It was cheap, but okay, we went half board and ate well. We also ate out in Calella, some evenings. I preferred it to staying in Barcelona itself, as it felt a bit safer to walk around - and relax. And of course, there was the beach, and outside areas with pools.

We did travel into Barcelona on the train twice to sight see for the day. Quite cheap - maybe 6 Euros or so. I can't remember now.

We also took the train to Girona - which was in the other direction. It was a bit more complicated with a change at an odd station and cost more, but was worth a visit.

My Ds is not really into hanging out with his mum, but he did like the travelling -into Barcelona and Girona, and it was fun finding the right train from the airport etc
