We live in North Yorks and I have a large tent with most of the relevant equipment but no car

So, we have a few days away to do activity stuff and have a couple of big days out planned but would really like to get away for a week, just to be somewhere else for a bit!

However, we have no money to speak of and I will have to seriously rob peter to pay for this (IYSWIM) so any ideas anyone?

I am not too bothered about doing stuff, I would be happy with a camp site with a play area (and a pool if I get really lucky)

and some highchairs have high chairs, travel cots etc.....

some hostels I mean

roisin · 25/07/2006 18:55

Secur - are any of your family/friends going away? You could offer to house/cat/dog sit for them, and generously offer to drive them to the airport (in their car), and bingo you have free accommodation and transport, and a new area to explore.

If the kids are desperate to camp, find someone with a garden and pitch the tent too

roisin · 25/07/2006 18:56

Whereabouts are you in North Yorks btw? Did I know that? (Racks my aged brain!)

SecurMummy · 25/07/2006 19:15

lol Roisin, I am not sure if you know or not - I am in York! sadly my family have done their holidays and they know me and my children too well to let us loose in their homes in any case

I will look into the YHA thing, the website says 3 but maybe individual hostels make individual choices?

I have discovered that a Haven park near us will do 5 nights camping for £70 or 7 nights for £116 which I think is great - especially as they have Rory the tiger who I hate but my children love so I may go with that as it seems easiest - I will still ahve trouble getting there though so will have to apply the grey matter here!

thanks for those links skribble, do you know if they have any hostels nearer Glasgow?

Skribble · 25/07/2006 20:21

ssd- Glasgow has a SYHA in Park Terrace in Central Glasgow. Open all year, all rooms en suite.

There is a newish one at New Lanark smack bang in the middle of the World Heritage site.

Loch Lomond Hostel is near to Glasgow and has a beautiful setting.

Or The pupose built one at Stirling is very central for Edinburgh or Glasgow.

you're a star!

Blondilocks · 25/07/2006 22:51

Have you looked into getting a family railcard? These are meant to be quite good, although don't know if you're near a station.

SecurMummy · 26/07/2006 10:03

Blondilocks, I do have a family railcard so that does help a little (although going on a train with camping gear could be a laugh )

Are your kids young? How are you going to manage a large tent, camping equipment and luggage on public transport with 4 kids safely? Braver woman than me! I'd stick to day trips on the train. We've had day trip hols before. Great if you have a family railcard.

Sugarpop · 26/07/2006 12:28

How bizzarre! Just had a mailshot for park resorts arrive and they have caravan hols in the summer hols for 229 for a week lots of locations too, some in the North too. www.park-resorts.com/tm612

SecurMummy · 26/07/2006 12:47

Sugarpop, don't worry I will not put my children at risk to get a holiday - I am surprised you would think that I would!

Day trips are fine but end up costing much more than a week away - we have done these too!

Didnt mean to offend! And wasn't critisising, I just couldn't cope personally with the luggage etc, if it helps we stayed at a park resorts last year on the East coast and it was good value for money and the kids were kept busy with good facilities and a lot of them are on bus routes too.

SecurMummy · 26/07/2006 17:03

You didn't Sugarpop - I was just being silly!

The resorts look quite good don't they!
