We have never been to Disney and are just starting to save (£400 so far so we won't be going soon - probably next 2-3 years). We are a family of 4, children currently 5 and 3. We live in Scotland and will go in school holiday period, probably Easter or Summer. Neither of us is keen to drive over there so probably looking at a Disney resort.

So...questions:

When is best to go?

How far in advance should we be looking to book?

How much should we be looking to save?

Where should we stay?

Anything else we should be thinking about?

Thank you ( getting excited just thinking about it all!!!!)

Just joining this thread and reading with interest! We actually live in Texas and are looking to go to Disney last week of October when we have our half term. Other USA schools are not off at this time as far as I know. Are the uk schools off then and will it be busy?

Has anyone bought hotel room and park passes separate from flights?

I think that with just one week we'll just do Disney parks and save universal for another time. Our dcs will be aged just 6 and nearly 10 by then, we've done Disney Hong Kong but dd2 was tiny then, dh and I used to live in paris so went to Disney paris lots and I last went to Disney Florida when I was 16, about 100 years ago. Getting excited just thinking about it

WallyBantersJunkBox · 09/01/2014 14:25

I booked all my tickets separately from the Park websites, I found it clearer and easier to be honest.

ChestyNut · 12/01/2014 11:45

I do think if it is a once in a lifetime thing a week isn't long enough. Could you not squeeze ten days or two weeks in? Smile

At 6 and 8 it would be a shame to miss universal and IOA. Especially for new harry potter stuff and simpsons.

I've heard that end of August isn't as bad for crowds?
Presume it would be very hot tho.

Tinkertaylor1 · 12/01/2014 12:32

We went with out a car and stayed in a western hotel, they put on bues as most hotel/motels do. Also the buses are very cheap and frequent.

I haven't read the whole thread because I'm supposed to be working but we have been to florida a number of times and are going again in October.

My tips:

Best time is october. weather is lovely, hot but not too hot to be wandering around. Storms have finished by then (although we did get the end of hurricane sandy one year. not a problem but we had an afternoon at universal that was showery.

Very few queues in october. Longest we've queued is about 20 minutes.

We always stay on site at disney although this year with DSs who will be seven and nine we are doing ten days on site at disney and four days on site at universal. saratoga springs and old key west are disney vacation club sites and often have good discounts.

there are BIG advantages to staying on site. the buses are free, run very regularly (every 10-15 minutes or so) and very convenient. You'll save lots of time and money (no parking, parking charges, walking to and from car parks etc). You get the free magic hours too which means you can get into the parks before everyone else and also stay later. this is the ONLY way to get into things like jedi academy to fight darth vader which is literally a queue at Hollywood studios and make your DH run to the sign up room as soon as you get through the gate.

We always go when its free disney dining. again this saves a lot of money. If you stay in one of the better disney resorts you get a lunch a table service dinner, a snack each day and a free refillable mug. Free disney dining is the best disney offer disney is a lot more than just the rides, the meals with the characters are a big part and they are VERY expensive if you're not on the free dining.

Don't get a car, the cost of the insurance etc makes it pointless if you stay on site. Taxi to universal is about $60. if you stay at a universal hotel you get a free express pass which saves you a couple of hundred dollars. Don't do universal without an express pass, the queues are too long and you won't get around everything.

Orlando is the airport from hell. I hate it. Sanford on the other hand is small and quiet and only slightly further from disney. You can get a limo transfer from sanford to disney for $199 which is a nice novelty value thing to do and is not much different in cost from a normal transfer.

If you're staying on site anyway don't pay extra for the not so scary halloween party. We went last time since we were given free tickets but it isn't worth the extra money. If you stand outside or eat at the polynesian (Ohana) that night you can see the fireworks anyway. Its for people who are just going for the night. Having said that the DSs brought back their own body weight in sweets from the trick or treating.

I am not a theme park person but I love our disney holidays whilst the DSs are young.

Stayed at the cheapest Disney hotel last time we went. Was on a tight budget. Stayed at Disney All Stars. Avoid if you don't have a car and avoid if you do. It was definitely in need of a total makeover the last time we went about 3 years ago and judging by recent photos it is still exactly the same.

Don't get me started on the "restaurant".

We went to the supermarket and bought breakfast to eat in the room rather than enter the restaurant in the mornings.

Definitely start planning ahead of your trip to get the best discounts.

littleredsquirrel · 12/01/2014 18:56

Try saratoga springs for accommodation. Its a disney vacation club resort (disney timeshare). Its one of their luxury resorts and the rooms have all just been done up. Its not overly themed although there is a low key disney horses/fox and the hound theme. The pool areas are great and the Turf Club restaurant is really nice. The snack restaurant is ok too. You can also walk around the lake to downtown disney which is really nice or get the boat across. It takes about 15 minutes to walk along the lakeside (depending on which part of saratoga you are staying at) and its really nice in the evening.

Check when spring break is for the yanks as we went in march this year an it happened to be spring break! Never again! It was soooo busy in every park! Next year we are going in October! Also avoid school hols, I've been in June and August to! Found June to be really nice! August was so hot! U could barely walk round the parks through heat exhaustion!! Book everything separately! Flydrive then separate villa! So much cheaper! We went for 3wks an had $6000 spends an spent the lot! An that was with already buyin all the disney tickets b4 we went! Take plenty of cash disney is not cheap! However u will have the most wonderful family time ever! Cherished memories, it's truly a magical holiday!! Ps. U have to watch the disney illuminations show in magic kingdom at nighttime! One of the nicest moments I've ever experienced with my hubby an kids! AMAZING!!!

littleredsquirrel · 13/01/2014 08:34

Thats precisely why you should stay on site and get the free dining plan and free disney dollars when its on offer. The first time we went we stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge. For a family of four plus all meals, drinks, transfers park tickets to disney plus a trip to discovery cove and a taxi to discovery cove it cost us £5800. We spent £200 when we were there for the fortnight because everything was included (but it wasn't a drinking alcohol type of holiday for us)

Second time we went the free spending money offer was reduced to $100 per family rather than the previous $100 per person and so that time, staying at Saratoga Springs and going to Universal twice we spent £380.

If you get the free dining plan likelihood is you will have food and drinks left over.

Rosvita · 13/01/2014 18:52

squirreli do you mind sharing who you bought that package through? Thanks.

ChestyNut · 13/01/2014 20:35

max we went last march/April and it was packed like sardines.
We're also planning for sept/oct 2015 Grin

littleredsquirrel · 13/01/2014 22:29

Not at all rosvita

First time we went we bought a package through first choice and didn't take them up on the car. Instead we arranged the limo transfer. Deal was free disney dining and $100 free per person (disney dollars). October half term for two weeks. We didn't book it until about 2 months before we were going though. Still managed to get all our dining reservations apart from Ohana.

Second time we went we went through Virgin when they were having a sale and the free dining was on (that time we only got $100 disney dollars for the whole family). Again October half term. Wouldn't recommend Virgin. We had a crappy experience with them and I spent a whole morning on the phone trying to sort things out with them.

This time we have booked the accommodation and tickets directly through disney and the universal accommodation directly with the universal hotel so that we get the free express passes. Flights booked directly with Thomson to Sanford. Transfers we will sort ourselves again. It was easier because I knew what I was doing this time and I know which disney hotels are good and which are not so great. We are again going at october half term. This will be the last time we go because DS1 will be nine and after age 9 disney charge adult prices.

littleredsquirrel · 13/01/2014 22:31

Oh and I also got cashback on disney booking and the flight booking through quidco

Maxbrooke09 · 16/01/2014 18:13

Ah did u! Yeh we went 3weeks in march, got married there it was lovely! Weather was quite cool at night this time round I found! But looking forward to going back next October! Save save save!!! My children will be 10 an 4 then so nice age for both really! How old are ur kids?

mummyhb2009 · 18/05/2014 10:11

Hi, I apologise now for the length of this I am Disney mad!

We took our son (5) on his first Disney holiday October last year (2013) for 2 weeks and starting to save to go again (very excited but will take many years) so hope I can help.

If going for 2 weeks and not wanting to take children out of school id go at Easter as it will be less busy and weather will be better for the littlies but be prepared if your wanting to do universal studios, Busch gardens, seaworld ect it is a jam packed holiday we were out everyday and there is so much we didn't do.

So as you probably know Disney has 4 parks;
Magic Kingdom - We spent atleast 4days at this park, using fast passes on one day to meet princess' with hour long queues. We had lunch with Winnie the Pooh and friends here at the crystal palace which was beautiful. Make sure at night you don't miss the electric light parade, fireworks over the castle and the light projection show on the castle. They also do a parade down the main strip every few hours during they day. We also loved the card game you can play here. You get the starter set from a stall (free) next to Tiannas secret garden where you meet her you then go on a hunt around the park saving Disney characters from villains finding secret screens where your magical powered cards fight. We easily could of spent days doing this and not many people know about it plus a great way of properly seeing all of magic kingdom.

Animal Kingdom - We found that Animal kingdom had a more relaxed calm atmosphere so used this park as abit of a chill out day. Make sure to get you Wilderness explorer book from the stand when you get into the park. This is full of tasks around the park for the children to collect there badges (from the film Up)

Hollywood Studios - Lots and lots of characters to meet here! And of course not forgetting the Fantasmic night show which is AMAZING!

Epcot - My partner loved this park exploring all the different countries at the all around the world but son wasn't as thrilled with this park although you can meet lots of characters here and it had the smallest queue to meet Mickey and Minnie. Queues for characters can get ridiculous. At night they have the Illuminations which is a fantastic firework show, fireworks at home will never be the same.

Then there's 2 water parks; Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon my only tip for these would be get the children water shoes. The floor can get very hot and is rough on little feet.

Downtown Disney - Lots of shops, restaurants, Cirque du soleil are here which was fantastic and Disney Quest a huge arcade like attraction which our son loved. We got reservations for the T REX restaurant here which was great pricey but so worth it.

In terms of when to book just keep your eyes peeled they do bring out some fab deals that can save you hundreds. We booked through Thompson which at the time was the cheapest deal. Floridatix are great if buying park tickets separately.
In 2 weeks for spending money including all meals (we didn't do the disney dining plan) bits for the kids and us! we spent very close to £2000 but we didn't have any restrictions as that could be your only trip to Disney.

We stayed at the All star Movie Resort. One of Disney's Value hotels but we loved it and will definitely be staying there next time we go. Plus the amount of time you actually spend in your room I personally don't see the point in spending more than you need to. This hotel is overly themed they have 5 themed buildings; Dalmatian, Toy story, Fantasia, Mighty ducks and Love bug. Which have huge statues outside my son loved it. And 2 lovely pools if you do need a break day. This Hotel does have very mixed reviews on Trip adviser but honestly it is lovely and clean and staff couldn't of helped us more.
Advantages for staying on site are the free easy to use busses to the parks which really did make things so much easier,
They now do magic bands, you all have your own these have you park tickets, room key, fast passes (if you get the my Disney experience app on your phone you can do your fast on there. a lot easier than it sounds) when pictures are taken with characters the photographer can scan them onto your band and you can also have a credit card put onto these so you really don't have to take things out with you. Staying on site also means you get the extra hours.
With staying on site you also get the free magic bus from and to the airport which means you really don't need to rent car. We did but for the price it would of been a lot cheaper to just get a taxi to universal studios ect.

All Show times, parades and character greet times are on the back of park maps.
Also in terms of the magic bands which I wish wed of done when I said about photographers scanning photos onto your band, go over the top with it they have photographers with characters, infront of the castle, tree in animal kingdom ect you can go and look at these photos and have just the odd one printed for a price if you want to or what we did is when we got back purchased the disk with all the photos on. This is a set price but it means you could have a thousand photos with all of you in them. Plus it saves you having to snap away and just enjoy the moment of seeing your children meet their favourite characters. The photographers are fab and get lots of shots. I was so pleased she caught a photo of Rapunzel kissing my son on the cheek because I missed it!

For the long flight we bought a trunki and filled it with new little bits (colouring bits, new game for leap pad ect)that he had now idea about so that really kept him entertained.
Pack light because you will be bringing lots home!

Most importantly just relax and enjoy it :)

If you miss bits its an excuse to go again haha xx

If you are planning on staying in a Disney resort I would try to get free dining, even if you have to book a more expensive hotel to qualify for it! We upgraded to a moderate hotel (Port Orleans) and paid about £400 more for our family for 2 weeks but it was so worth it, we ate in loads of lovely quick (Self) service restaurants in the theme parks and other hotels and because of the generous portions we often had left over drinks and desserts which we saved in our room fridge to eat at other times.

There are many beautifully themed sit down restaurants which are lovely but we found they took up lots of time and were incredibly expensive, particularly when you add on the compulsory 20% tip. If you want to go to the popular T-Rex restaurant in Downtown Disney to enjoy the atmosphere but without paying the prices you can go in at non-busy times (such as late morning) and just have a drink at the bar, no reservation needed.

It is worth visiting the other hotels to take in the atmosphere. You can see fireworks on the beach at the Polynesian, the camp-fire sing along at the Wilderness campground, the animals at the AK lodge, horse and carriage rides at Port Orleans etc. Some of our favourite moments were hanging around at the other resorts and eating in their restaurants.

We went for two weeks and I wouldn't consider going for a shorter time. We underestimated how tired the heat would make us and how long it takes to get from hotel to theme park; meaning we didn't manage to do everything we planned.

My only other tip is that if you are not planning to drive I would be tempted to use taxis if you are going off the Disney site. To get to International Drive we had to get a bus from our hotel to the Magic Kingdom, then a monorail, then another bus and then the I-ride trolley. What with the waiting around for them to turn up and the fact that the I-ride trolley stops every few minutes and takes forever, it took us about 2 hours each way. We heard from other guests a taxi is approximately $35 each way to Universal, well worth it I would think!!

Whatever you do, enjoy!!!! GrinGrinGrin
