Have any of you been to Mexico? Looking at the Grand Bahia Principe Akumal for November next year. Has anyone stayed here or somewhere similar? Thanks.

We went there a few yrs ago. Fantastic all inclusive...food and drinks were top notch. Great cocktails ...bucks fIzz at breakfast etc. Only thing we wasn't keen on my was after 11pm if you wanted to carry on drinking in the bar you had to get a mini bus to entertainment area...getting there was fine, just a bit of a bunfight to get one back as the hotel was 1km away down a dark drive.

We stayed there this year in august. It rained for 5 days but was beautiful place. If you do go make aure you visit Xcaret and stay for the evening ahow it was amazing. Also do the snorkelling with turtles half day tour it was absolutely amazing@

Akumal is one of the nicer places we went to. I wasn't that impressed with our hotel even though it had great reviews on here and Tripadvisor but it was in Playa del Car. The beaches were beautiful. Cozumel was a complete waste of time.

givemeaclue · 28/12/2013 18:24

We are going to a akumel in May 2014

givemeaclue · 28/12/2013 18:24

Thanks everyone, think I will book this, but will look in to the weather Smile

firstly this gran bahia hotel is made up of a few different hotels in a massive lovely complex. Theyre called akumal, coba and two others. These are also names od local villages/places so whilst one person may have stayed at Akumal they prob didnt stay at Gran bahia principe akumal resort. Lovely place though and we would go back. Best time to go prob april

Ranoutofnames, I was thinking of day tri, to cozumel, why was it a waste of time, can you tell more?

LouisaJF · 29/12/2013 09:09

We went to GBP Akumal for our honeymoon three years ago and it was incredible. I would go back I a heartbeat. Definitely recommend the boat trip to swim with the turtles.

I could not fault a single thing about the whole place and I am exceptionally picky.

Well, for a start, the taxis are extortionate on Cozumel compared to the mainland. It is also largely populated by 'beach clubs' - not very family orientated. There are lots of currents around Cozumel so not great for family snorkelling. It was a complete waste of a day - might be better if you hire a jeep and tour round but I know someone who did that and she said it was still a waste of time.

I would however recommend the Yuca Treks excursions if you want to get out and about. We did the Chichen Itza trip with visit to cenote and traditional Mexican meal. Check out their reviews on Tripadvisor

Not sure fancy chicken it's I am not great with ancient ruins in boiling heat.

Thanks for the heads up re Cozumel, did you go to stingray city there?

AnandaTimeIn · 30/12/2013 20:19

Cozumel was a complete waste of time.

I agree. We only went there cos DS was going to dive, and it's a lovely little boat trip from Playa del Carmen.

He had a great time going down some wall in the water lovely people who took care of him for the day but the only place to go was some awful American style day club on the beach. (I don't dive).

There's nothing in Cozumel, a car strip and a cruise ship from Miami..... at least there was a nice little morning coffee place run by East Europeans (from Miami) who gave me the tip how to spend the day waiting....

AnandaTimeIn · 30/12/2013 20:24

Oh, and they advertised "swimming with dolphins" but never saw any thank God, in that awful concrete swimming block

I'd go down to Tulum - amazing temple on the beach and eco places to stay around....

AnandaTimeIn · 30/12/2013 20:31

Yes, Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba are all recommended!

Coba has been excavated only 5 or 10% and actually the only pyramid you can still climb. I sent DS up there with the camera Smile

You can hire bikes or get a rickshaw to take you around (huge area).

Chichen Itza is very commercialised, but still great...

Love Mexico! food and cocktails to die for! Grin

ranoutofnames · 31/12/2013 18:20

Hi, no I haven't been to Stingray City - I thought that was in Grand Cayman :)

copycat · 01/01/2014 23:21

Yep agree re Cozumel. We also had a very rough crossing which was no fun and DS1 was very sick. Coba is definitely worth a visit.

We've been to Mexico twice and stayed at the Grand Sirenis and Sandos Playacar. Both are very nice hotels with beautiful rooms with double jacuzzi baths and seperate showers. Sandos (and actually any of the hotels in Playacar) is within walking distance of Playa Del Carmen, which is a great place to wander round or go for a meal/few beers.

Playacar itself is also nice and there's a small shopping complex there with a Starbucks and there's also a bird centre.

I wouldn't pay for an organised trip to snorkel with turtles in Akumal. You can get a taxi or Collectivo (local bus type thing) to Akumal beach and then hire snorkelling equipment and a locker on the beach. Much cheaper and you can take your time too.

If you like Monkeys there's a place called 'The Jungle Place' which is a sanctuary where you can go in with the monkeys and interact with them. Tour operators don't offer this trip and its really popular, so you need to book direct and well in advance.

I love Mexico. It's very commercialised compared to the rest of the Carribean, but not horribly so IMO.

Oh, we've been in November and December and the weather was great. A bit cool compared to other Carribean destinations, but not chilly. October is more the end of the hurricane season really. Although anywhere tropical means you'll probably get some rain but you'd be unlucky for it to ruin your holiday.

Stressedtothehilt · 04/01/2014 08:23

Sorry acrually you cant take a trip their yourself now. Snorkellers need to be with a guide as the seagrass is getting destroyed. There were security people on beach stopping tourists goimg on to beach. Mt snorkel trip was only about £18 anyway and that included a cenote visit and swim
