Anyone know of a great hotel in Amsterdam for a kiddie-free weekend? (celebrating 20 years together ) Preferably fairly central, ideally quite funky. Although not exactly money no object, hoping DH can be persuaded to push the boat out after all these years...

Ooooh we've just done exactly what you want to do ! We're going in 4 weeks. I can recommend expedia.co.uk, LOADS of lovely hotels, we went 4 star and have booked the top notch room, for 3 nights. With flights and some sightseeing trips booked its just over £700.
I can't wait, time on our own for the first time in 5 years!!
Happy 20th anniversary too !!

i stayed here once, it is quite groovy, very central, but not luxury, if you know what i mean. /link{http://www.amsterdamby.com/thotel/pages/profile.htm't hotel}

Google boutique hotels in central amsterdam for child free hotels, keep to The Jordaan Area, v central, authentic part of Amsterdam. Same side of Damrak (the main road into Amsterdam from the station) as Anne Franks House. The Jordaan is also near to flower market and you will find lovely shops, and outdoor restaurants (people eat early in Amsterdam).

For cleaper than boutique - excellent value 4* try hotels in Dam Square, or Hotel de l'Europe but avoid Vondelpark or Leidseplein (too noisy) or anything near Van Gogh Museum (not central enough)

Downmarket a little further, Victoria Hotel by the station is 3*+ and Ok, a bit bland, but again fairly central

  • avoid hotels with rainbow flags outside !

oh and take trainers!

we stayed here in april

right next to the water market and 2 min walk from rembrandt square (loads of restaurants), great curry house opposite

we've stayed all over central amsterdam and best tip is don't pay for breakfast - eat out, get a much better deal. next to hotel I've linked to theres loads of cafes doing breakfast.

if you book this one - excellent service; rooms lovely then ask for a room with a view - there's some excellent views from the top of the building.

if its your first trip into amsterdam - at the airport, in the train station bit theres a minibus shuttle service to the hotels - bit expensive but useful. If not, its 20mins by train in to central station and then about the same walking to get to hotel. though at the bottom of the damrak theres bike style taxis that will take you too.

if i remember the other hotels I'll post those too

stayed here on first trip - beautiful hotel, right on a canal, bit further walking from here though. worst bit - breakfast is horrible!

stayed here on a last minute deal - very very central, 5 mins from central station in road that runs parallel to damrak, its a business hotel and has lots more facilties to offer, not in a pretty location - main road with tram but services are fantastic, definately the best of the three.

I've stayed at another just opposite the Crowne Plaza but that's not worth sharing with you

One hotel I stayed in that was completely fab was the Amstel Intercontinental, not funky, more old fashioned luxurious (the way I like it) with a swimming pool that has a fantastic view of the Amstel (the big river running through Amsterdam).

Walking distance to most places of art and culture.
