we are off to 'Greenman' a smallish/exclusivefolk festival in august...it was awesonme last year...incredible weather and the music wasnt bad either.

of course we had big plans to get a posse together, put our tents up in a ring and share the child watching out a little bit....but its just us three again this year.

i love it all...the woolly jumpers, chip suppers, puffy eyed dawn breakfasts going 'shhhh' alot...the trying every food stall at least once and the doughnut stall hourly...aaaahhhh

..and of courseall the hippy stuff they lay on for our short companion

what are your plans ?

Off to Maker festival in cornwall at end of July. Small, very diy and hippy-ish- real mix of music and great pancake stall!

zephyrcat · 11/07/2006 17:05

I want to go to the WOMAD festival - I used to go there every summer and have been dying to take the children but I always seem to be pregnant when it comes around!!!

Dp wants to take them to the Cropredy Fairport Convention. Never been but he says it's fab and very child friendly - lots of folk music and hippies

beansontoast · 11/07/2006 17:22

oohh barefoot and preg at a festival...theres a lot of cachet there to be exploited ..or are you at the 'sleep on the floor...are you MAD?'stage

am going to google the maker fest.

have heard something about teh Cropedy wotsit before...poss onhere...def v.child friendly.hippies always are

teh stuff for kids at greenman last year was incredible...brilliant puppet shows and craft stalls to make you own ummm things!

lanismum · 11/07/2006 17:29

holiday

zephyrcat · 11/07/2006 17:32

When we used to go to womad pre-baby days we used to sneak under the fence in the middle of the night, make beds from bales of hay and play bongos around the campfire!! Not sure that the kids would be up for that!! We had planned to get a camper van thing, stay overnight at womad then head down to Newquay but £600 for a van for a week!!

spidermama · 11/07/2006 17:41

I'm researching my festival at the moment. I wanted to go to the Small World but it's sold out. I'm considering the Big Green but it might be too big. I'll now look up Greenman as I haven't heard of it.

beansontoast · 11/07/2006 17:43

yeah we looked at vans once..not for very long it must be said

you could hold your own fest in your garden?...my frind used to do this over glast/bry weekend when it all got a bit too steep.

(i know its not the same really x)

I've just looked and I can't do those dates. I'm wondering about Buddhafields. That's also sold out and anyway it starts tomorrow.

I'm desperate to get to a festy but have been putting off booking because DH never knows what he's doing from one week to the next and I didn't fancy ending up on my own, camping, with four kids.

sugarfree · 11/07/2006 17:58

We're off to Beautiful Days in August (Planning to meet up with FullMoonFiend and her crew).

Another hippyish one and very family friendly.
It was fantastic last year.

(AND THE PROCLAIMERS ARE HEADLINING!!!!!!)

I've heard great things about Cropredy btw

zephyrcat · 11/07/2006 18:00

Ooh where's Beautiful Days? Esp as the proclaimers are there!!!

sugarfree · 11/07/2006 18:05

Just outside Honiton in Devon,Zephyr, but I think it's sold out.You can sometimes get tickets on Ebay,or the forums here or here

sugarfree · 11/07/2006 18:05

Yup,sold out.

Snafu · 11/07/2006 18:08

Beans, I'll see you at Green Man

Am soooo excited - think it's going to be great. Haven't been to a festival for years and certainly never with ds. There's a group of us going with kids - 16 in all, I think! So you're very welcome to come and join our posse...

spidermama · 11/07/2006 18:35

Does anyone have a copy of Festival Eye for this year?

Mercy · 11/07/2006 18:46

I LOVE Womad - but sadly many of these festivals now cost a fortune and we just can't afford it any more

albatros · 11/07/2006 18:50

I went to one years ago in Treorceey (appolgise for spelling but something like that) in Wales it was great atmosphere, music, food, weather.
I haven't been able to find out anything about it since does anyone know it?

spidermama · 11/07/2006 18:56

albatros we need someone with a copy of Festival Eye. Meanly, they don't print it on line because they want us to buy it but I'm running out of time to book time off work for a festival.

beansontoast · 12/07/2006 14:53

oh snafu really? ...how fantatstic...last year relaly was incredible...the weather especially...a PERFECT reintroduction to th efestival thing.even during the festival last year i was thinking''oh god!what if we cant get tickets for next year...the setting was beautiful.

are you a folky fan?...(i can enjoy pretty much all music i think)however joanna newsome last year was more than enchanting.ahhhh the memories.

how old is your ds?

OP posts:
Snafu · 12/07/2006 18:50

Beans, I was so gutted when I found out that Joanna Newsome had played last year and I missed her. I heard she was absolutely brilliant and gorgeous - would love to see her live. I was also hoping Devendra Banhart might play but no joy this time around.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Silver Jews, Martha Wainwright, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Simple Kid...also think the DJ tent might be amusing

Just praying for good weather...

Snafu · 12/07/2006 18:52

Oh, and ds is 3. We are bringing a variety of small people ranging from 18 months to 8 years - could be heaven, could be hell I think they'll have a whale of a time though.

desperatehousewife · 12/07/2006 18:53

i'm a festival virgin and am going to my first this weekend....Latitude in suffolk. Have absolutely no idea what to expect and haven't heard of a single band that's playing...how uncool am I?!

beansontoast · 12/07/2006 20:38

desp/h/wifey ...you dont even need to know the bands to have a good time ...i didnt last year...not a soul!...came away a convert to all sorts..poets etc

sanfu that sounds like a great posse...perhaps i'll accidentally lose my ds[aged three]in amongst your lot

OP posts:
dewmeadow · 12/07/2006 20:47

totally at all hippy festival talk - I would love to go to Greenman - looks fabtastic (adefinitly a Tony Blackburn moment there!)

have a great time all

spidermama · 13/07/2006 14:20

Hoooorayy!!! I've just booked tickets for the Big Green Gathering. We'll be there in the camper van for the first time. I only hope there's some decent music. It's not always the strong point of this particular festival.
