How much does it cost to get your average car serviced?

i just paid about £300

but that was for stuff like a new battery and windscreen wipers and handbreak thing on top

Servicing costs vary wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer, model to model, and also it will depend on where you have the service done. It will be lots more expensive to have it done at a Ford/Vauxhall/Audi (whatever the brand of car you drive) dealer, whereas if you have it done at a small local garage you will pay less (but will invalidate your warranty, if your car is still under warranty).

Average in our area (London) at local garages is £140 for full service.

My Zafira just had its 4-year service (semi-major one but no spare parts) and it was about £200. Last year's was about £150.

I get it done at the dealer because in theory a FSH makes it worth more when you come to sell, although as it will probably be with us until it drops dead that might be academic

thanks everyone, just phoned around and found a local garage that will service my renault (not under warranty) for between £80-£100, so sounds reasonable.
I only passed my test last year and still not aufait with all this sort of thing - and I don't fancy the thought of being the little woman who gets ripped off!

I pay about 90 - 100 for a yearly service, and 300 for a massive service once every three years on my toyota.

Manufacturers warranty not annulled if you use Original Equipment parts (ie. theirs).... you can get the work done at any VAT-registered garage though I think.

Hi Pippo. I spent £50 at my local college and did evening classes on "car maintenance for women". Can now happily change oil, filters, tyres, brakes and discs. I was quoted over £200 by my local garage to do the front brakes/discs on my car. In the end, the parts only cost me £50 and it took me an hour to do myself! With a little help, I've just done the water pump, cam belt and fuel lines on my car (parts £40) and the next job will be the central bearing on the prop shaft All in all, total cost of fixing the car (including course) was less than getting a garage to do just one job. It's definitely worth thinking about and it's much nicer going to a garage and telling them what you need doing, and not the other way round! Saying that, I drive a 13 year old Vauxhall, so obviously no warranties to worry about

Blimey. Wot a babe. Impressed with anyone that can do mechanics !

Blondilocks · 11/07/2006 22:39

OH & dad used to do bits to my old car. Never really fancied it myself though - can change a wheel & stuff like that though.

I think with newer cars it's worth having them servived properly as I think most people look for full service history etc.

I think around £100 seems reasonable for a service. I think OH's is around £150 (although he's got a diesel) & mine is probably around that with the MOT as well.

Dec · 11/07/2006 22:39

aw shucks The truth of the matter is I'm too bloody minded to ask a man for help It's also quite satisfying to take the car for an MOT and have the mechanic say "you're the one who changes gaskets aren't you?" Gets you a little bit a respect and they don't rip you off all at the same time!

pippo · 12/07/2006 12:27

wow Dec am impressed, sounds like a really good idea, will have to look into that one
Thanks everyone else for your replies.
