6 weeks summer hols to fill - ideas here please

Am starting to think about what I can do with my two DDs (5 and 3) over the summer hols, and thought it would be good to get the mumsnetters to collate ideas. I don't want to end up with too many expensive days out. So in addition to playdates, I have come up with:

  • fruit picking at local farm
  • holding a 'school' fete in our garden for grandparents, friends etc.
  • picnic in local park

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

Difficult isn't it? Time can weigh heavily on you. I've signed dd up for swimming lessons (45 minutes every day) at an outdoor pool for the 2 weeks before we go on holiday. It's reasonably priced and it breaks up the day a bit since we go at 2.30.

I've seen a local farm offers clay modelling/pottery for kids for a reasonable price too. Made a mental note to remember that for next summer.

we have passes for the local soft play-unlimited for 7 weeks, maybe check if there is one near you, also have NT membership so will make the most of that.

If you go on to the gingerbread website, www.gingerbread.org.uk there is a downloadable leaflet thing which gives 50 ideas to keep children occupied over the summer with no or little cost involved.. some are quite good - have a look..

Libraries have lots going on, usually free. Story times and crafy sessions.

Pottery painting does cost but it kills a few hours and is good for pressies.

Home cinema - rent dvd and make popcorn, turn lights off etc

Making camps, sleeping in them ( inside or out )

Have managed to volunteer myself for school PTA who are currently looking for fundraising ideas.
Thought about a treasure hunt. Anyone offer advise where to start or any other ideas??

Big bowl of soapy water and a range of kitchen stuff to make bubbles with in the garden.

In this weather shadey woodland areas are lovely and cool. Go on a treasure hunt for stones or leaves.

Trip to nearby town to check out the shops (fun window shoping ie lets the kids take the lead and no stopping to look at shoes ) and the cafes or icecream parlour. Different park to explore.

Big box of pavement chalks (pound shop), decorate the slabs/ paths around the house.

Loads of craft stuff for rainy days.

Picnic in the garden.

Obstacle course, washing basket hoops cardboard boxes.
Indoor or out.

Using our NTS membership. Lots af activities and special days.

Free museums, often lovely and cool/ or dry on a rainy day.
