So what are your best tips for holidaying in a hot country with a very young baby? (apart from sitting in hotel with the air conditioning on!)

How young?

Sun tent (but can get stuffy)
Inflatable boat with an inch or so of water in it.
Shade (duh! )
Little fan blowing air across a frozen bottle of water (if you have access to a freezer!)

Sun tan lotion (duh) and sunsuits, hats with back flap things, sea shoes (depending what country you are going to) complete sunshade thins for pushchair (parasols are crap) air conditioning in hire car, Alot of this might not be appropriate for your baby as he/she might be too young!

Where and what age?

Get a mist spray bottle and fill it up with cold water, when a bit hot, spray cold mist over everyone and the baby

Wear nothing other than a nappy (baby, not you) and smother with sun cream.

Keep hydrated.

You can buy clothes with built in spf, but I find that they are too sweaty and its better to let the kids go naked.

(we live on the south coast of spain)

nappyaddict · 28/07/2006 23:17

the obvious really ... just keep them in a tshirt or vest and a nappy with a hat and sunglasses and keep applying the suncream.
sunshade for pushchair and car if you are hiring one.
and keep offering extra drinks of water if ff.
also i have seen fans that attatch to the pushchair, but failing that get one of those mini fans from woolworths to hold over lo.
soup dragon - we have got a sun tent for our holiday in spain - are they stuffy even if you have the front open?

If you hire a car, get one with A/C

Get a muslin and mist it with tepid water then lay it over baby in just a nappy. Worked a treat when our ds got overheated in the recent heatwave.

and if baby is v.young you have to check the sodium content of mineral water you give them...think it has to be less than 20mg, IIRC.

we recently went to Greece and took one of those black mesh buggy covers and it was brilliant, as others say the parasols are crap! we covered dd2 in long thin clothes and gave her masses of water to drink. How old is your littlie?

I would also take a supply of dioralyte just in case.

Thanks all, Turkey was fantastic, and we managed to bring little wriggler home in one piece. In fact, she was happier out there than back home!

(13 weeks old by the way)

So much for all the horror stories and dreadful looks we got from people before hand.

my sons 5 weeks and we fly out monday to marbella. i know those looks all too well! how do they think spanish babies cope? do they all keel over and die errrrrrrrrr no! i suspect he will cope far less next year when he will not be so used to the heat though ... since he's been born he has only known high temperatures so i don't know why people think he is going to pass out or something. he won't know we aren't in england!!

nearlythree · 30/07/2006 00:40

My ds (9 wks) got really unwell during the recent heatwave, but then I don't do sunshine either. Maybe it's in the genes?

nappyaddict · 31/07/2006 01:20

probably cos he isn't used to the heat. it took me a while to be able to cope with it too!!
