Anyone flown with American Airlines (transatlantic) with baby???

Here's the problem: American Airlines flights are £330 cheaper all up London-Boston return however we flew with them (domestically West Coast to East Coast) a few years ago and had a really bad experience (and that was without baby!!!). Our travel agent said that their International flights should be a lot better than their Internal flights but we still have concerns. Of course, on one income the £330 is a big deal as well!

Has anyone flown with baby/kids transatlantic with AA? What did you think?

No we haven't Hey Baby but I'm going to read with interest anyone that has as we are flying to the USA with 2 children (3 & 1) in September. Out of interest what was yourt bad experience if you don't mind me asking?

HeyBaby · 05/07/2006 10:28

Oh nothing particular. It was just generally bad - very old aircraft, uncomfortable seats and extremely RUDE and unhelpful flight attendants. Eg:

Me: "Excuse me, Miss?"
Flight Attendant: "Can you just hold on ONE MOMENT, I am in the MIDDLE of SOMETHING!"

I wasn't sure where the "attendant" part of the title came into the job description .....

Yes I have used American (and United) in the past to fly to the USA.

Two words to describe the experience - never again!!!. I do not like using them full stop but will have to do an internal US flight with them in August. Am not expecting much so will hopefully not see it as an endurance test.

The service on British based carriers like BA or Virgin is better.

flew with AA 5 times a year in my last nanny job over a +2yr time and started with a 8wk and 18m and that grew again.

Never had a problem with staff heating bottles, being nice and helping where suitable.

We always fly united (btwn uk and washington, and washington and california) because of airmiles and dhs work....they are fine I would say. They are no Virgin - which was the best flight we've ever had - just soooo nice etc. but never had a nightmare. Last time my veggie order wasn't booked and the attendant bought me her own cereal to eat - they've always been pleasant enough. We fly with 4 kids (10,7,4,and 1 now) I've flown on my own with the baby, and befroe she was born with the other three. Especially if you have a bigg family I"d save the money - its never been that bad for us!!

We are flying to the uk with them again in August

Flew with them last month. Awful, awful, awful. Big disaster vowed not to do so again for a very long time! Sorry. Did fly with a child and they were just the worst imaginable. For about 4 days I felt physically sick at the thought of them and am still trying to pluck up courage to write my complaint letter!

eidsvold · 06/07/2006 03:05

funny isn't it different experiences - I have had to fly united a few times and each time had poor service, rude condescending cabin crew, abusive cabin crew ( to students I was travelling with) and just nightmare journeys. Have never flown united again.

American - always had brilliant service and cabin crew - they do have one of the biggest seat pitches - inspired me to fly with them first of all. Both international and internal - have been brilliant ( but not flown iwth children)

I thought American transatlantic was great... but I think whoever you go with, it depends on the attendants that day... I once flew Virgin with my then 1.10 yr old, & when I begged the attendant to take the food tray away before it went everywhere, I was told he was busy, but if I wanted I could take it to the galley myself.... yeah, thanks... other times Virgin has been great in their defence... he was just a bitter ....[stops short of saying it for fear of retribution smiley]

I wouldn't fly AA if I was desperate!! Flown once with DS. Nightmare, only way to describe it. Staff are awful and totally unprofessional!

milquetoast · 20/07/2006 13:54

We flew with them to the US in January.

We found AA staff to be rude and generally unhelpful. I think they don't see it as their job to wait on people! When the flight attendant came around with dinner she rudely asked, "Did you pay for the baby's seat?" holding out a plate of food like she wasn't going to give it up if we said no. We had, but declined the meal. I asked for some cheese and biscuits for DD but she never brought them, surprise.

However, I did some research before we flew and found out that their planes are almost all very new. They did all appear to be in good condition. We flew through Houston, which is their hub and they seemed to be rolling in money.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/07/2006 13:56

We flew with them transatlantically in February. It was dreadful. The staff were unhelpful, and they didn't have seatbelts for babies.

At one point, they came around to tell me that DS1 had to be strapped in, as there was turbulence, and he could end up flying through the air. I said, ok, what can I do about DS2? Oh, hold onto him.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/07/2006 13:58

Oh, god, and they held us up getting onto the flight, as my name is similar to someone on the no fly list. No shit, sherlock! I have a really really common last name.

And they had weird baggage allowance issues coming back (but not going out!) that cost us extra money.

SofiaAmes · 21/07/2006 07:50

I wouldn't fly aa with or without a child even if the ticket was free!!! I had such an awful experience with them with my ds. And several other bad experiences before ds was born. I always fly ba from the uk to the us. And if I had to have a second choice it would be virgin. Definitely don't fly aa.

littlerach · 21/07/2006 08:02

We flew to LA with them last year, with 2 children, and found them okay.
They had all male attendants who were all nice enough, and reasonably helpful. They actually went all out to get a sky crib for DD2, as there weren't nay on the flight. But they didn't have seatbelts for her.
Food was fine, I had veggie, but no kids meals, which was fine by DD1!!

SofiaAmes · 23/07/2006 09:33

I have never been on a ba flight where they DIDN'T have a sky crib available.
