A relative wants to take my 13yo abroad with them. Will they have any problems at the airport? Anything I should do to help or prevent any problems?

I had no problems with taking my 14yo DNiece away this summer.

Probably worth writing a letter of permission and including a photocopy of the birth certificate/your ID just in case.

My dd went abroad this summer with her aunt ( different surnames) and they didn't have any problems.

DH and I both have different surnames from each other and from ds. Never had a problem.

I think it is advisable to send a letter of consent. if you don't need it no problem.

I have taken DN away, with no problems. He has a different surname from me, and looks very different from DH and I. We were asked if he was a relative coming back into the UK, but that was it. I can't see the point of letters giving permission as they are so easily forged. I guess it can't hurt to have on just in case though.

We've taken a friend of dd's skiing with us twice now, and I've taken a letter from her parents, with a photocopy of their passports and phone numbers etc... It's not been needed - so far. But I guess that's not to say it couldn't happen.
She's been 13/14 (and will be 15 next trip) though - don't know if that makes a difference. We just had to inform the airline that she was travelling with us and was not an unaccompanied minor (ticket had been bought separately).
