French Water can you help?

We're travelling to France in August with dd, who is 4 months. Anyone know is it safe to boil the french water and use to mix up formula and baby food or do we need to get bottled??

French water is perfectly safe. However the majority of the French still can't get used to the idea of drinking tap water so they either buy it bottled or get it from one of the natural springs (you'll find a tap in many of the villages for getting your water).

I understand that French water is safer than the English stuff. However the majority of mums just use volvic or evian to make bottles and they don't boil it - wonderful marketing ploy in France where a baby's bottle is marked somewhere on the label to show you you can use it in babys' bottles.

Rhubarb - I was gonna use the tap in the kitchen of PIL house there, is that still ok? They drink it

Mrs Frogi -I didnt think you could use mineral water like volvic cos the mineral content is bad for babies?

I understand that some mineral waters are ok'd for babies, and they are marked on teh label.

whoops the disguise was from another thread. Im not mrs fogi!

I don't have any bottled water at the moment but there is a piture on the side of the bottle showing that it's suitable for a baby. You can also get ready made formula in tetra paks suitable from 4 months.

What gets me is the ad you see sometimes for a brand water that meant to help with slimming! - to help maintain or regain the figure. Also a brand that is meant to be good for constipation - especially in infants. You can tailor you bottle water to your needs!!!

Should nomally be safe to boil the water though.

French tapwater is perfectly safe, as others have said - especially if it is going to be boiled first.
If you prefer bottled JellyNump look for the words "convient aux biberons" on the packaging ("OK for baby's bottles")Evian definitely falls into that category as it is low in sodium.

Rhubarb · 04/07/2006 10:35

Or it'll just have a picture of a baby's bottle on the label.

Tap water is perfectly ok!

Marina · 04/07/2006 10:41

Eee, times have changed since I lived there. Good idea to have a picture.
Um, any news Rhubarb?

Rhubarb · 04/07/2006 11:11

No.

No news is bad news.

Pants pants pants

Agree it's not a great sign, rhubs but sometimes volutary sector can take a v long time to get their act together and employ someone. There's still a smidgeon of hope.

And it was a brilliant attempt, hon. Well done for giving it a really good go. It'll stand you in good stead for future interviews, I'm sure.

(Sorry for hijack, jellynump)

Rhubarb · 04/07/2006 12:01

JellyNump · 06/07/2006 21:36

too late, and too vague, but my sis did this (err, 16 years ago) and found that boiling tap water in France not a good idea - think it was concentrating some of the goodies that get spread on french fields (fertiliser etc) and made her twins really ill. Then again, this was 16 years ago...

jamiesam · 06/07/2006 21:45

oh, this was very specifically in the summer btw when I guess more fertilisers and they get more concentrated by evaporation of water in river/reservoir...
