A day in Athens what to do?

Hello, posting for advice on behalf of my DH as apparently he can't be on mumsnet as he is a boy, although it is fine to read the classic threads over my shoulder. Anyway he has a day stop over in Athens this week. Hasn't been before- any advice on a good day out?

the obvious one is the Acropolis - minimise baggage as they don't let you take much up. Wear decent shoes and go up to admire. If it is wet take great care on the marble steps.

the Acropolis museum just opposite is also excellent, although I see that the admission fee is now 5 Euros, not the E1 I used to pay.

the Acropolis ticket also allows him into other sites, don't miss the Temple of Olympian Zeus among others.

food? wander down any back street.

When I was in my early 20s, we swam in a swimming pool on the roof of a hotel when we had a spare day. We didn't have cossies, so swam in our knickers.

Was that the kind of thing you were thinking of?

What sort of thing does he enjoy?

Wander through Plaka.
Take coffee in Psirri.
Have fresh octopus and cold ouzo at Piraeus.
Try Souvlaki at Monostiraki.

Personally I wouldn't wander up to the Akropolis if you've only got one day. The Agora is nice. I've not been to the new Akropolis museum but it looked breathtaking. The Archaeological museum was very good but be sure to check opening times.

might out myself here, but I used to rep trips via Athens that stopped for two hours. Almost all of the guests went up the Acropolis and raved about it.

Piraeus is quite a way out and a very workaday place. There are plenty of restaurants in the centre where you can have souvlaki and coffee.

each to their own -but to go to Athens and not see the most famous and beautiful site seems a bit of a shame.

You can see it everywhere in the city. Yes its beautiful but parts of it are like a building site and its full of tourists. Chances are you'll shuffle around the site following the queue.
Walk up there and around Plaka because it is lovely but I'd rather not spend €12 or whatever it is, to pass 2 hours staring at the backside of the American in front of me.
