Interailing with children

Has anyone done interailing with children? We really fancy doing this in August 2 adults & 5 children. The children will be 14, 11, 8, 7, and 4 at the time of travel and are all extremely adventurous and up for anything! Any suggested routes? or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a great idea, a real adventure. I've done some European rail travel with kids younger than yours, and they really enjoyed it. August will be really hot in Southern Europe, so you might want to try Scandinavia, Benelux, Germany or Poland. Sleeper trains are a great way of getting around, and with the 7 of you you should be able to share a 6 bed couchette which will save on hotel costs.

Best advice - use www.seat61.com for loads of really useful information on European rail travel.

We are doing this - two mums and two kids...our plan is to do East Coast of Italy .....and West Coast of Croatia ...maybe get down to Corfu.... You dont have to Inter rail - we looked at these costs and they appeared expensive ...when travel can be cheaper when booked in advance...seat61 is brilliant...

I did it last year - me (single parent) and two DCs then aged 9 and 13 (nearly 14). We did just over two weeks, Berlin-Prague-Vienna-Salzburg-Lindau-Geneva-Paris. There are several different kinds of interrail pass you can get now, which allow you to travel every day, or only a certain number of days in the 2/3/4 week period.

If I did it again, I might try to fit less in or go for longer, or try to do one longer (3/4 night) stay somewhere in the middle - it did feel like we were packing/unpacking all the time, even though we stayed everywhere for at least two nights. And it was was not a cheap holiday by any means, with the strong Euro meaning all hotels and meals were expensive. But it was great fun, and we saw a lot.
