Has anyone had a gap year with their kids?

Just wondered where you went/how long for/how old your kids were...
My work is offering redundancy and am sorely tempted to take three months off and travel with the world with my dd. She is 6.
I would have enough money to support myself for 6 months which should be long enough to get another job.

Has anyone done anything like this or thought about doing it?

We spent 3 months going all the way round the world with DS when he was almost 7 years

We all had a deffo brill time

We taught him as we went round

Go for it

MALDIVES, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, FIJI, HAWAII, LAS VEGAS, TORONTO

Wow sounds brilliant.
Was thinking India, Thailand, Australia, America.

Did your son's school mind hugely?
Did you son miss home/friends etc?

Am I mad to consider doing it as a single parent?

There's a mumsnetter doing it right now. Here's the blog:

I think it sounds a wonderful thing to do, but know I don't have the bravery to attempt it, so I'll live vicariously through those of you that do!

We had to agree to teach him each day as it was SATs year

DH is a senior school chemistry teacher and had a sabatical term

We emailed and texted ds school and they followed our travels on a world map we gave them with our route marked on it

So they learnt all about the world as well.

We spent 6 weeks travelling around New Zealand in a motorhome which was deffo brill.

We left in Jan and came back 3 months later

Well actually we went round the world in 80 days

Can't really comment on India etc cos have never been there

If you agree to teach your DD each day the school will probably be happy enough

We adapted the cirriculum, like when they were studing electricity we studied SOLAR power in Maldives and Water DAMMS in New zealand

So it can be done

Go for it!!!!!!!!!!

This is something I have always longed to do, bluejelly.
I would definitely say go for it if you've been offered the opportunity.
You might find this site useful.
Good luck

Planning on doing 6 months in Oz from January with 18 month old and disabled husband. Really need good packing/travelling hints.

jamsambam · 10/08/2006 23:55

go for it bluejelly, im a single mum and im planning to do it soon, but we dont have to do sats so it will be a bit more flexible for us i think!

fluffymummy · 22/08/2006 13:15

we spent 3 months in India before we had ds1 and met quite a few people travelling with their kids...generally they seemed to be having a really good time - both the backpackers and the locals were giving the kids a lot of attention and seemed happy to help out the parents. Go for it...!

SeaBee · 07/12/2006 10:59

it seems you're all talking about travelling with children who are old enough, but how about travelling with a baby or toddler?
i am also thinking of taking 6 month to a year off going to India and South East Asia, also possibly alone and i m not sure what would be best: wait the little one can walk or go while she is still a baby?
thanks

RTKangaSANTAMummy · 07/12/2006 11:01

I would wait til able to walk imho
