We're off to the Lakes for a week in July. We're staying in Windermere. W've already been to the World of Beatrix Potter. Anyone got any recommndations? Also do you think a 2 year old would be alright on the ferry from Bowness to Ambleside?

If you held on to them tight compo!
I think there is a freshwater aquarium at Newby Bridge
and you are not far from Tarn Hows, with pretty, level walking, and also the Grizedale Forest Sculpture Trail. Seem to remember a nice children's play area there.

Muncaster Castle is great - lots to see, and stay to watch the herons being fed, a really good day out.

Whereever we went on the meet up was delightful- JanH will know, my dd still talk about it now. Great especially if they can paddle.

LilacWine · 21/06/2006 16:20

we went to the aquarium in maryport, was good and it had a playground at the back. plus you can have a stroll on the beach too!

TwinsetandPearls · 21/06/2006 16:20

Brockhole - Grizedale is also lovely

nikkie · 21/06/2006 23:44

Steam train at Haverthwaite to lakeside (and the aquarium)

Fellfoot (national trust park) is lovely quite close to Windermere.

Grizedale has a great park , lots of walks sculpture trail great for little ones.

Towards Barrow-in-Furness there is the animal park at Dalton, an owl sanctuary (very newly opened so not quite finished -worth a visit though if you are in the area)on the outskirts.

Will probably think of more later

thanks everyone - that's a great help

As others have mentioned, deffo Fell Foot Park. There is a nice playground (only small though) and you can buy duck food to feed the ducks on the lake. You can take a very short ferry ride from Fell Foot over to the Aquarium. It's a lovely place to walk round or take a picnic and a ball.

Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway is good if you have a train buff (my boys love it!). This also goes to the aquarium.

The aquarium is good but not much for your money I don't think.

You can take an open top bus sightseeing ride through Bowness.

If it's a wet day, there's a wacky warehouse at Barrow and there's a soft play area in 'The Piano Bar' (I think it's called that!) in Ambleside.

Brockhole is fabbo - loads to do there - outside playground, indoor interactive exhibitions and you can take a ferry ride from there too.

You should be fine on the ferry - you can sit inside if you are worried about safety.

A bit of a drive up north but there is a potteries place where you can paint plates and bowls and there is a playground there and animals to see too. It's called Wetheriggs in Penrith. Another good one if it's wet.

I've not done Muncaster Castle or the Dalton Zoo but both have been recommended to me.

GDG · 22/06/2006 14:33

Re the ferry - we've taken ours on there loads of times right from being babies. Eldest is only 5 now - no problems.

nikkie · 22/06/2006 19:31

If you go for a soft play in Barrow go for play zone instead, its much nicer place and it soes nicer food too!
here

Go to Ullswater for a day - glenridding, nice area by the lake for a picnic, litle pebble beaches for paddling and poking a fishing net fruitlesly into the water...., get the steamer along the lake, have a drink in the pub which has a garden and children's play area.

marthamoo · 22/06/2006 19:37

I live in Cumbria so I could recommend the following - we have a 3 and 1 yr old. Theres Trotters Farm in between Keswick and Cockermouth which is good for small ones (Cockermouth's good for feeding ducks and has a small park). There's L'aal Ratty railway at Ravenglass and also Keswick Leisure Centre if you want swimming (with slide and wave machine), Eden Ostrich World, nr Penrith, soft play area in Penrith and at Rheged which is just outside. Aquarium at Maryport is good as someones already said. At Silloth (further up from Maryport) theres a small fair at the weekends with tea pots etc. and in between Maryport and Silloth at Allonby theres a good park which caters for young and older children with a shop with good Twentymans icecream, the beach is also there too.

chatee · 26/06/2006 20:49

Carlisle castle/Tullie house and Bitts Park(which has just reopened the fantastic new play area with water features and sand pit and a really good selection of toys in the play area)as well as lovely gardens, tennis courts and crazy golf

BouncyTigger · 27/06/2006 13:55

Babyblue2, going to visit grandparents at the weekend and taking DD to Trotters Farm as it's only 5 miles from where they live. Do you know if the food's any good or would you recommend a picnic?

Gem13 · 27/06/2006 14:20

We found a fab soft play in Kendal the last time we were visiting the in laws. DD was just under 2 and it was the nicest one I've been to for little ones (DS was 3). Just in case it's raining.

I can't remember the name of it but it was the only local one in the yellow pages. It was hard to find although it is central (Kendal has a one way system in parts) so get directions!

chatee · 27/06/2006 14:27

hiya BouncyTigger,
hope you don't mind me replying too...
i would take a picnic with you and maybe just top up with something from the cafe(everything seemed to be 'with chips' last time we went.)
also we are going with pre-school in a couple of weeks and had a chance to pre-book a childs lunch pack or an adults lunch pack for £3.00 but i didn't think it was much good...
by top up - the scones with jam and cream were nice
have a good day out xx

katierocket · 27/06/2006 14:30

Grizedale Forest and Brockhole - both great for kids

winniewoo · 27/06/2006 21:56

Hi
Sorry to hijack this thread with another question but you all seem to know what you are talking about when it comes to the lake district so.........
I am looking to stay self catering in August with DH and DS 5, 3, baby. Which area to go to?..then I can start my hunt online. Not too remote..a little village would be perfect but where? Any ideas?
Thanks
oh..and any self catering places adjoined to hotel?
Thanks again!

winniewoo · 28/06/2006 10:48

nikkie · 28/06/2006 19:21

I would say Coniston/ Windermere/Bowness ?
But as I live local not sure about holidays.

muffinmum · 07/07/2006 00:05

there is docker park farm which is just off a65 on way to kirkby lonsdale, also yummy cafe with big window where children can watch cows milking, on rd from kendal to M6 signposted.

nikkie · 07/07/2006 20:19

Sizergh Barn , great farm shop too!
Also try duckys

linsayevie · 18/07/2006 18:00

Just been to Sizergh barn last week, and would have to double-recommend it. Phone ahead and check the time they milk the cows, our 22-mo-old loved watching it while we scoffed cake and tea.
