Loads of great art museum, botanical gardens, castle, go to belem and wander round the cultural centre ( had good cafe and kids bit, lots of grass and excellents tartes de natas), the expo site (boats, cable cars, more museums), wander round barrio alto but murder for buggy, go on tram trips all over.

Lisbon is wonderful, when are you going? Wish I was

Had a very nasty split so going in about 2 weeks time my friend lives there but doesnt see the things to do as you never do when you live somewhere.

Tips for travelling there with a kiddie?

Ah, Jelly, I rember the thread now. Great place to go to get away from stuff. Its very child-friendly, people-wise. Though extraodrdinarily hilly and cobbly.I have got a Time Out guidebook which you are welcome to borrow if you would like. If you had the energy to take the coach to Sintra it is spectacular (like a fairytale castle in the hills) or you can get the local train to the beach at Estoril (mad 70's resort) or Cascais.

Will try and pick up a guide but thankyou, please let me know anything else that might help me out there

Might be bit hot, you´d do well to get out of lisbon for a day and be near a beach - very easy to get train to Cascais or Estoril for beaches. Nice cultural centre in Cascais with some small exhibitions on.
Science museum is good at Expo98 - like the science museum in London very interactive, our 3.5 year old loves it! Nice walk along the river from Belem towards centre of Lisbon. Chiado another great area, lots of shops and cafes.
From Expo you can get a boat across the river, which is fun, and cool.
Travelling wise - Lisbon airport easy, very central, loads of cabs that are relatively cheap (is this the sort of thing you wanted to know?). Most people will speak some english, so you won´t get stuck, although for cab drivers this is rarer, is best to write down where you are going and show it to them!
I live just outside lisbon, 3.5 yr old ds and baby, would love to help out if you get bored and want to meet up!

I didn't have children when I went to Lisbon but I have to say the Portuguese are LOVELY people. And Lisbon is very hilly!

Sorry no help whatsoever but am envious and hope you have a fab time

Lisbon is great - love the place.
Never been with children but would echo chocqueen - when we were there it was 39/40 degrees! VV hot and still.
Be prepared...
Have fun.

Hiya,

We got a decent car seat, one of the ones that is lightweight and has no metally bits on for DS1 who is 3 and 15kgs or so from Carrefour, one of the big supermarkets. It cost about 20 euros, so not too bad. When we´re in the UK though we just use one of the booster base things, and they´re only 10 euros, so just over a fiver! If your friend can collect, I have a car seat you are welcome to borrow - it´s a Britax one, with the straps built in, ie not just using the seatbelt of the car to hold down child and seat(not being very clear...!). You´re more than welcome to borrow it, will go and check if it´s stage 2.

(very confused chocolatequeen wanders off.....)

That would be fantastic if we could, i can put you in touch with her, i know she lives about 30 miles from lisbon in a small place.

Where are you if you dont mind me asking?

In Cascais.

We´re leaving for a weeks holiday on Sat morning though, so it will have to be this week unless you can wait until after 9th July? Can meet her in Cascais?

It´s one of the ones that they go into for a couple of years - is this the one you mean, ie forward facing seat with straps built into the seat?

If you can do the CAT thing, then I´m registered I think!! x
