We are off on holiday to Egypt in a couple of days and I am panicking now as so many people have be warning me about awful tummy bugs!! Any advice on how to avoid them? I have heard the money is filthy? Is this true? TIA x

I just don't get why you would willingly go on holiday somewhere so unsanitary where you fill your suitcase with anti-bac gel and spend all day worrying about the water and your children falling ill.

Unless of course the trade-off is a rich cultural experience, which I'm afraid Egypt, for the majority, is not. Most people are not there for the diving and the pyramids Wink

It's also somewhere with an appalling human rights record and virtually non-existent women's rights.

91 women were raped in Tahir Square over four days of anti-govt protests last month, including a 22 yr old journalist who was gang-raped with sharp objects and ended up requiring life-saving surgery.

It's on my list of Places I Will Never Go.

That's fine, that's up to you. If it is on a list of places you will never go you don't have to worry about it, do you? Wink

We went to an excellent hotel, very clean, excellent food, beautiful beach, taught DD to swim and enjoyed looking at the fantastic fish and coral whilst snorkelling.

Hi there

I have just got back and yes please take precauation. I wish I had of. I’m bk in the uk and it’s been a week of cramps and incredibly loose stools.

I barely drank, didn’t touch money and didn’t drink from their rap (water system)
Please please brush your teeth with bottle water and their ice is fine. To be honest I think it’s the water from showering entering our body one way or another... however careful we are. Just to add we didn’t use the pool so no water contamination there.

On the last day (annoyingly) after spending £20 mid week at the local chemist we were told about Antinal!! Egypt sell it for £2.50 and is the most effective medicine for the bacteria or whatever it is that really messes with our guts over there.
I took so many other medicine from the uk and out there and nothing worked for longer than half a day.
Some other guests had the problem too. Please on your first day head to the chemist and stock up, I’m sure you’ll have a great holiday without any worry especially knowing your set with the meds.

The sea is magical the highlight was buying a snorkel (full mask/head one) breathable under water; however there cheaper here and you can just float and enjoy.
Clara x

Just to add as it had been mentioned in a previous post that it might be the rating of the hotel this is not the case we stayed in a 5star.
Just to add please never hesitate for a doctor to come and see you at your hotel, make use of that service; that’s what the insurance is for!! 😊 and piece of mind of course.

I think it's the money. Me and the kids didn't touch it and we were fine. My husband scoffed at us and he got sick. Mind you he always brushes his teeth with tap water too. He was sorted out nicely by the hotel pharmacist so no probs. We were at the hotel that poor couple died at recently 😕

I can't comment re Egypt, it's on our list, however we've travelled to Cyprus, Turkey, Tenerife, Morocco, Madeira, Spain etc with the children and we've always used ice cubes/ ate salads etc. We would never do all inclusive as we prefer to eat out locally. We're usually just sensible/ cautious everywhere we go. My kids tend to just eat pizza / chips etc but myself and my other half tend to eat pretty much anything.Maybe we've just been really lucky /fortunate that we haven't gotten ill. We always drink bottled water, never drank tap water abroad. Having read the comments maybe it's sensible to take extra care in Egypt? I wouldn't let this worry you too much, be prepared and enjoy your holiday, I've only had food poisoning twice in my life and both were from takeaways in the UK! Have a lovely time 💕

I've travelled frequently to Sharm as part of my work and I know these recommendations don't sound like a holiday but then I was never on holiday when I was there. I couldn't afford the inconvenience of being unwell especially as Gyp can continue for weeks after you return. Here are my tips for staying safe.

Anti-bac all the time and after touching everything - lift buttons, door handles.

Never touch your lips or nose with your hands unless you have anti-bac first.

Shower with you lips closed, spit any water from your mouth.

Only brush your teeth with sealed bottled mineral water.

Only go for freshly cooked hot food prepared in front of your eyes served onto really hot plates - yes this completely limits what you can eat from the buffet as this excludes all fruit, rice, salads, sweets, ice cream - basically everything. Even the bread I would only eat if I toasted it first.

Never touch the utensils in a buffet or any food that has the risk of having come in contact with the handles of the serving utensils. If you must eat from the buffet, use your own utensil.

No fruit.

Only drink bottled drinks without ice. Preferably, I would drink lots of herbal tea.

The money is filthy.
