Hi we are going t a French farmhouse with a pool next week. I have three children but due to a recent incident I Sam paranoid about my 12 month old baby falling in and want her to wear a buoyancy aid at allntimes ( we will of course be way. Ching her at all times but I wanT extra reassurance).

I've been reading reviews on those float suits that are costumes with built in floats around the waist but loads of people have said they are useless and your kid just tips upside down in them.

Has anyone had experience of these good or bad or please can a hone recommend ome thing else? Those swim jackets don't seem to start til age 2 and are not recommended for babies.

I have found one of those suits with a great neck floatntomstopmnaby going under but it's £45.

Can anyone please recommend something

Thanks

By all times do you mean literally at all times when you are at the farmhouse or just around the pool?

Those suits aren't actually intended to be worn as a safety device, they're a swimming aid so they will just give extra buoyancy whilst paddling or being held but a non moving (or flailing) child will essentially tip whichever way the float lands.

Even a life jacket could go face down so unfortunately there is nothing that would be safe without supervision. Obviously i'm not saying you will be deliberately not supervise but if an accident should occur.

One of those suits might be good whilst your in the pill though although a little bulky.

a bouyancy aid won't help if dc falls in, they are swim trainers as peanut says. You can of course buy a suitable lifejacket which will keep your dc safe if they fall in, good lifejackets should self right and keep the face clear of the water. Alit of what people refer to as life kackets are just shaped bouyancy aids, not self righting lifejackets

Ok thanks. Is that a bit over the top do u think? Friend just had tragic accident and I'm paranoid. Can u recommend a particular life jacket?

Agree with other posters - there really is no substitute for constant supervision.

I don't want to scare you, but read this, so that you know how to spot when someone's in trouble: What Drowning Really Looks Like. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

Check out Two Bare Feet for more affordable buoyancy aids / life jackets.

Have a lovely holiday! I'm sure the DC will love the pool.

as someone else points out - a buoyancy aid or swim aid is just that, you float the way you fall in (same for adult ones). Only a lifejacket turns you the right way up and keeps your head above water.

you'll just make her hot and uncomfortable in France in August if she has to wear one of these outside the pool. If you are there and watching, that is her safety. (As I'm sure I don't need to tell you, that means watching, not reading a book or listening to music).

IN the pool, put her in a float coat or similar.

sorry about your friend.

Also just to reassure you, all pools in France must legally be surrounded by a secure fence with a child-proof gate. This has been a key reason for us in choosing France for our hols for past few years. So when you're not actually in the pool area you can hopefully relax a bit more.

We actually had a very scary incident with our almost 5 yr old in the pool this year - she had taken her armbands off and I was too busy watching our 1 yr old. It taught me just how vigilant you have to be.
