I went to Marocco via Malaga recently for work and basically we flew into Malaga airport and drove to Tarife and got the hydrofoil over. It only takes 35 minutes and it's amazing to reach somewhere so different in such a short time. Just find a villa near Tarife and hire a car.

Beetroot · 12/06/2006 22:11

what is tarifa like???

So where in Spain is nice? Is it worth visiting? apart from the cities?

Whatever you do, do not take the day ferry from Algeciras to Tangiers. We did it years ago, and it was a colossal error. You get so hassled on arrival, you end up having to take a guide (both DH and I are quite assertive people, but you get followed, and annoyed, and followed and annoyed, and so you give up and accept one, and then that one scares off all the others), but you hate the guide, and there is a carpet store, and it's all just bad.

Food was nice, though.

the \link{http://www.andalucia.com/cities/granada/alhamhistory.htm\alhambra} is impressive

Ronda sounds good, gorges. No sea. Interesting terrain. We stayed in Gibraltar, which I would not recommend. We visited some tiny something-de-la-frontera town up in the hills that was much nicer. Algeciras is manky, very port.

as is \link{http://www.andalucia.com/cities/cordoba.htm\cordoba}

Javea, Denia, Oliva, Benicassim - no crowds, watersports, but a little too far north for Morocco too. Whymummy knows, as she is from Benicassim, but she hasn't been on MN for ages. Lucy5 knows Tarifa etc, she lives in Estepona (also nice, but not sure about Villa) The hills around Granada / Seville are fabulouds, but possibly too far from the coast. Costa de la Luz is quieter and on the right location for trips to Morocco.

moondog · 12/06/2006 22:22

Beetroot,Morocco is fantastic.
Dh and I went acouple of years ago and just bumbled around for a month.
Bloody loved every minute of it.
You'renot going soon are you?
It is hot as Hades now.

Carmenere · 12/06/2006 22:23

Tarife is ok not exactly a destination resort but kind of pretty. Tangiers was not as bad as I was expecting hassle-wise, the King of marrocco has passed a law preventing shop owners chasing you down the street and it seems to be quite effective.

Gingerbear · 12/06/2006 22:23

Forgot to add, Javea, Denia etc all on Costa Blanca, one hour from Valencia/ Alicante airports. Spacedonkey may know some places?

fairyjay · 12/06/2006 22:30

Before I met dh I spent a number of holidays staying around Marbella/Mijas. We would always drive down to Algerciras and get the boat over the Tangier for a couple of days. I found it a fantastic experience -the contrast between the lifestyles is just huge. At the time I had friends in Tangier - one who ran a hotel - so we were 'protected'. But I loved it - although I know others who think it is a 'filthy hole' (quote), and would never return.

Beetroot · 12/06/2006 22:30

Beetroot · 12/06/2006 22:36

OP posts:
moondog · 12/06/2006 22:38

Deffo 40C+ at that time.
We went in may and it was already frighteningly hot.

Beetroot · 15/06/2006 10:18

Carmenere · 15/06/2006 10:22

I can reccomend the Movenpick hotel in Tangiers, it's 5 star but not European prices and if you are just going over from Spain for a look it is nice to have somewhere luxurious as Tangier is a bit raw around the edges.

Beetroot · 15/06/2006 10:31

yes that does look a good option Carmenere.

bamboozleslover · 28/07/2006 00:45

puerto duquesa is further down the coast than mijas. we are staying in marbella this year as we got a cheap deal, but we hope to stay in puerto duquesa next year as it is so unspoilt - no high rise hotels which i hate so much. puerto duquesa

bamboozleslover · 28/07/2006 01:01

my friend recommends these apartments - apartments - they are 30 mins from gibralter where you can get a ferry to morocco.
