What is the food like in Mark Warner resorts?

Sorry, but all avenues of an expensive holiday have to be explored and as my dh is a chef the food on holiday is pretty important to him. Is there a huge buffet every night with the same things wheeled out night after night or do you think there is enough choice to keep you pretty happy for a week? We are pretty into having local food, we are looking at Greece or Portugal by the way. Thanks!Smile

dUNNO ABOUT mw BUT lILLI,YOUR DH MUST BE THE ONLY CHEF i'VE EVER HEARD OF WHO (oops) wants to eat proper food!
Most I've known eat crap.

I think buffets in even the nicest places get a bit tedious and always tweaked to suit tourist palates.
Would be far more fun to stay and eat locally in real restaurants I reckon.

It has been a while since I went but 'all right' is the best I could say. They do change the menu round from day to day.

Good local reasturants are better IMHO.

Breakfasts are nice, the last place we went to did freah pancakes, also freshly cooked omlettes

Lilliput · 12/06/2006 19:41

He does his fair share of eating crap aswell, he had a big blowout at McDonalds today, that will do him for a couple of months. He eats a lot of sandwiches but when it comes to being on holiday food is important but for me it's childcare so that's why we are looking at mark warner.

Thought so
I have been tempted by them on that angle too.

We went when the kids aere little and I was a sahm. We have no family nearby and I was utterly exhausted and wanted a bit of a break from my charming but ever so delightful dd. The holiday was a good one. Not the finest food in the world, but at least I got to eat it, hot, while not spooning food into an infant!

We went when dd was older and ds was 28 months but that didn't work as well as dd was being a bit of a mare.

Nowerdays, with both kids in school and me back at work, 'me time' isn't needed so much, so we go camping instead and eat out with the kids! Grin

Pierre et Vacances are ok for food, and have childcare. How old are your kids?

We did P&V in the South-East of France, this Easter, and although the on site eateries weren't great they weren't horrid, either. And you don't have to do half-board, either, of course.

Lilliput · 12/06/2006 19:55

We're looking at greece or portugal in October, kids will be 3.5yrs and 19mths.

We're also looking at Portugal for October, half term week . MW haven't been able to send me the details yet though Angry as it isn't the resort they featured in the main brochure but is the one on the website instead ! Not been with them before though.

Lilliput · 12/06/2006 20:26

bumping this, sorry to be a pita but dh awaits more from the oracle that is mumsnet!

The food wasn't awful, but you didn't gasp in admiration IYSWIM.

If he is a real foodie, he'd be a bit disapointed I think

Katymac · 12/06/2006 20:29

Well I went 5 star to Egypt

Breakfasts - good
Lunch - ok
Dinner - ok

Desserts very good

Salads good

lots of choice - but not "excellent" food

NotQuiteCockney · 12/06/2006 20:41

I'd think nearly any resort isn't going to have great food. Captive market and all that.

I'd think, for good food, your best options is somewhere with B+B or half-board sorts of choices.

Oh, and we had very good food in Cyprus. From just about everywhere, except the hotel. If that helps.

chonky · 12/06/2006 20:51

Have you looked at Sunsail? Similar sort of holiday, but you go half-board, so some nights you get to eat out locally.

LIZS · 12/06/2006 20:54

Actually iirc the Portugal resort is half board .

essbee · 12/06/2006 21:10

When I went I thought the food was more than ok. 5 out of the 7 nights were buffet style (and all the lunches were) but there was loads of choices and I think i'm right in saying everynight was different. It's not anything over special though and it certainly wont match local cuisine.

Lilliput, Kinderhotel Unken nr Salzburg had EXCELLENT food and fulltime childcare. Also full spa tratments, saunas etc. included. I´m a very discerning eater and am sure your DH (and kids) would be delighted with it. Buffet style breakfast and lunch, in evenings one (traditional Austrian style) buffet a week, otherwise 4 or 5 course served meal.
In Austria, but about a third cheaper than MW -and probably fully booked up for this summer... Check it out though kinderhotels.com
