Has anyone been on a Disney cruise?

IsaacCox · 28/07/2013 13:47

(Reposted from long haul as I only just noticed this cruise section was here :))

We're planning on going to Disney again in 2015 but to satisfy our Disney needs grin we were thinking of going on a Disney cruise next year. Or actually, another idea was to add on a cruise after our stay in florida the year after next.

If we were to do it next year, we would either do a European one or transatlantic. I've found a pretty good deal I think- 2 weeks transatlantic starting in Barcelona and ending in Puerto rico for around £1500 in total. If we were to tag one onto the end of our next trip, it'd be around the Caribbean for a week or under.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has been on one, where was it, which ship and what did you think? I've never been on a cruise before but DH has, though he was about 11, so any tips or info gratefully received!

Thanks Flowers

fisharefriends - I just put your details into the DCL site to get the figures. If you have one cabin, it would be a cabin with a verandah, and that comes to £6708 for the Norwegian Fjords in May half term.

If you decided to go the two cabin route, it would cost you £5134 for two inside cabins for the same cruise.

I'm guessing the cruise you are looking at is the Dover to Barcelona one in July? That is expensive, at £8641 for all of you in a verandah cabin, or £6144 for two inside cabins.

Personally, I would go with two inside cabins over one veranda cabin any day. More space, two lots of bathrooms to use etc, not to mention the money you would save!

It is a heck of a lot of money, they are fabulous though!

Thanks sheep Smile I'll check it out

NickiFury · 18/04/2015 08:15

sheep I am looking at that cruise too Smile.

Ilovefluffysheep · 20/04/2015 15:53

It is great timing because of the half term holiday. Could have a mini mumsnet meet on there!

TheJiminyConjecture · 20/04/2015 15:58

I was hoping that this thread would pop back up as it's because of it we're booked on a Barcelona cruise for 2016 Grin I would love to go this year but will have a newborn in the summer so next year it is. Will happily live vicariously through you folks though if you don't mind Wink

Ilovefluffysheep · 23/04/2015 15:48

We did a disney cruise from Barcelona last year Jiminy. Was fab!

Hillfog · 03/05/2015 22:42

I love the look of the May cruise too! 3 x Coeliacs on gluten free diets in this family though so we've never done anything other than self catering. Just need to be brave I think and trust that they'll handle it well.

Hillfog, on all the cruise/disney forums I go on, all I have ever heard is how fabulous disney cruise line are at dealing with special diets/allergies etc.

I don't have a special diet, but am vegetarian. Not all the veggie choices are that great, a little bit uninspiring and sometimes stuff I don't like. On the four cruises I've been on they have been great at accomodating me, basically showing me the next evenings menu, and if there is nothing I like will make something especially. They have also done special veggie curries (and made enough to feed a small army so they are shared with the table!).

If you speak to guest services they will get someone from the restaurants to speak to you, and go through all of your food requirements. The special diets and allergies food are made completely separately from anything else to avoid cross contamination issues, and they can also assist with choices from the buffet as well.

RocknRollNerd · 05/06/2015 18:01

Disney are absolutely amazing for allergies and special diets. DS is allergic to nuts and we love eating with them Grin. We did a DCL cruise in Europe in 2013 and have just booked to do a US one in 2016.

Basically it's the perfect combination of an extremely strong customer service culture combined with the US litigation culture - they want you to have an amazing time and they're paranoid about a lawsuit if they cause an allergic reaction!

A huge plus on the cruise is the way dining works - you move around the 3 main dining rooms during your cruise and your waiters move with you so after day 1 they will remember that you're coeliacs and if you call Guest Services before the cruise they will note the requirements on your booking and on night 1 they will ask who has the allergies and double check everything.

At the buffets etc the service is just as good - on arrival day the main buffet is very busy, we asked at the start of the queue what to do and one of the chef's came out, talked us through everything and then when DS had picked what he wanted went and got 'fresh' from the kitchen so no contamination.

DH noticed at other table service restaurants, eg when getting breakfast or lunch DS's order was taken on a different coloured slip of paper and the chef would come out to double check. We would also get asked as we sat down if anyone had allergies so clearly a little flag flashed when we gave our cabin number.

Hope this helps - I would imagine they treat coeliac the same as nut allergies, our experience was overwhelmingly positive and I can't recommend them highly enough.

Hi we are doing the 7 nts from Barcelona in August dc's are girls 7 & 8. And boy 4. Is it worth booking any shore adventures or will the chn want to stay on board? Also do I need to prebook any on board activities or do you just turn up?? I really want them to get the most out of it and miss anything because it's fully booked.

RocknRollNerd · 03/07/2015 14:40

It's really down to whatever will work for you and how your dc will be with shore adventures - we did the Med Cruise a couple of years ago at the end of August with DS who was 8 at the time. Here are some things that might be worth thinking about though (not sure what itinerey the cruise you're on has but am assuming various stops in South of France and then down the west coast of Italy).

Firstly it will be very hot, therefore full day excursions might not be huge amounts of fun. We did Rome as that was what DS was dead keen to see, DH and I know it well enough to do our own thing there and we took it easy - hit the main sites (Colosseum and Forum) first, then a long lunch and took it easy in the afternoon with lots of stops for drinks, ice-cream etc. It was still very very hot though and we were grateful for the aircon coach. We also did a half day trip to Pompeii which worked really well as we were back on the ship in the afternoon relaxing.

If you want to I think you can in fact leave the kids in the Oceaneer's Club/Lab all day so you could go off and do excursions without them - if they are the sort of kids who like that kind of thing then that is an option perhaps.

On all the port days you can 'tender' or disembark onto shore at any point after the excursions have all set off so you could just do your own thing eg decide late morning that you want to go into Monte Carlo for a bit of a wander/lunch etc. There are loads of resources on line about doing your own thing in the ports, some people organise their own excursions and there is a whole industry around pre-booking outside of DCL if you want to.

A huge plus of staying on the ship on port days is that there are far fewer people on board, therefore the lunch buffet is less busy if you go there and the pools are so much less crowded (they are packed in the daytime, or at least the kids pools are, the adult ones are generally 'busy' but not unbearably so). We really enjoyed our port days on board.

In terms of booking on board activities we didn't book anything apart from dinner at Palo (we were on the Magic) and an afternoon in the Spa for me and DH. Both of these we booked in advance as we really wanted to make sure we could do them. I'm not sure how likely you are to be able to book those at the time/date you want if you wait until you're on board.

We found there was so much to do on board that we didn't need to book any other formal activities - we just took things as they came. Your DC are perfect age for all the character meet and greet stuff and that takes up some of each day (you get a Navigator each night with all the stuff for the next day). We also went and saw a couple of movies and saw the evening show every night. DS and DH went and did the towel folding on the spur of the moment one day. For things like mixology and choc tasting I have no feel for if they get booked up in advance or not. As it's Disney though guest services on the boat will be as helpful as they can be.

DS had an absolute blast in the Oceaneer's Club/Lab, he went after dinner every night until closing time pretty much so DH and I used to sit on the deck in the adult bar with wine. We went onto holiday time (sleep late, afternoon siesta, late dinner, late night) and it worked really well for us DH and DS had siestas, I used to go to the adult pool with a book and drink cocktails for two hours

We're doing our second cruise next year and at the moment I think I might book some more of the onboard activities for us purely because there are a few that I fancy for a first time cruise though just hanging out on the ship was enough for us and it was incredibly relaxing.

Hope this helps, if there's anything else you want to know I'll try to help.

RocknRollNerd · 03/07/2015 14:43

Oh, meant to add, the princess gathering might now be ticketed, that would be one to book if your DDs want to do it, that is hugely popular as you can imagine. We sat having breakfast one day looking at the queue going all the way down the corridor past the dining room. I was pretty grateful we had a DS not a DD I must admit but on the other hand I could totally see that it was an amazing opportunity for little girls and would absolutely let my kids do it if they wanted to.

pragoonanan · 08/07/2015 22:19

Hi
Do we need to book anything in advance? My DS is 3.5 and DD is 6 years old. X

RocknRollNerd · 20/07/2015 11:20

Pragoonanan - have you read the two posts above yours, not sure how much more I could add... The only other thing would be if you want your youngest to use the nursery rather than Oceaneer's then I think that must be booked in advance and there is a charge. Oceaneers is just turn up when you want and free.

Nearlyadoctor · 05/02/2016 11:31

I realise this is an old thread but we are thinking of going next year ( Florida Disney this year) and would be really interested in feedback from those going this year - particularly the Norweigan cruise from Dover.

Thanks in advance

Ilovefluffysheep · 07/02/2016 12:31

Will try and remember, as I am doing the Norwegian cruise from Dover in May. Can't wait, will be my 5th DCL cruise.

Also doing transatlantic in September.

Nearlyadoctor · 09/02/2016 21:15

Thanks ilovefluffysheep hope you have a lovely time !

NickiFury · 07/03/2016 16:24

ilovefluffysheep we are doing Transatlantic in September too Smile. Did it last year as well and was amazing. We went to Castaway Cay and into Miami so going to be very different this year but I have never been to Canada so am excited about that.

Ilovefluffysheep · 10/03/2016 19:42

I'll see you onboard then Nickifury! Are you a member of the facebook group, or go on either the dibb or disboards?

RockNRollNerd · 16/04/2016 19:00

We've just done the Fantasy in the Caribbean - it was fab. DH and I are both mumbling at each other about another one in a few more years - maybe Panama Canal or a West Coast. If finances permit I could see us doing another Med one between now and then!

Ilovefluffysheep · 05/06/2016 20:20

Back today from our Norwegian Fjord cruise. It was amazing! Weather was beautiful, there was some kind of heatwave going on in Norway so it was much warmer than here so I'm told.

Geiranger was my favourite port, stunningly beautiful, but loved all 4 of our stops. The Disney Magic was as wonderful as ever, we all really missed sailing on her last year, was so good to be back!

I could rave on about Disney Cruises all day! Can't wait for my transatlantic in September, I also booked for the transatlantic next September as well!

RockNRollNerd · 09/07/2016 19:18

I'm jealous of you doing a transatlantic (two in fact!). I would love a longer cruise with more days at sea. I keep idly looking at Panama Canal or the repositioning one up the West Coast to Vancouver but they would be a few years off. More realistic for us will be the Med in a couple of years I reckon.

Did you sail on the Magic before her 2013 dry dock - how does it compare now?

Ilovefluffysheep · 30/07/2016 19:05

Yes I did, sailed on her twice before drydock including my first transatlantic!

She is definitely much improved since drydock, although I do miss the spectacular chandelier, the new one is quite boring. Also, for us as a family, I don't like the fact that you now can't split the main bed into twin beds like you used to be able to before. I refuse to share a bed with the kids (not shared a bed since splitting with my ex husband over 15 years ago!), so I have the sofa bed (which I've slept on 5 times now and is actually really comfy), whilst kids share. Not great at 17 and 18, but they do it without moaning because they love disney cruises and its a small price to pay! Cabin host was very good on our cruise and they were given a single duvet each, so although sharing a bed had separate covers, and they didn't really care.

Aqua dunk is scary, done it once but don't feel the need to repeat it!

No idea if I'll actually make it on the 2017 transatlantic, but I'll keep the booking for now. Only 7 weeks to go until this September one though, I can't wait!

ChablisTyrant · 30/07/2016 19:14

How are the boats for travel sickness? My DD gets very sick, eg vomiting on an airplane! Would she be ok? I'm sure we'd all love it. Would love to do Norway in the height of summer!!!
