Lake Garda in September - where do you recommend?

DP and want to go away for a week in September and are thinking about lake Garda. We want to be able to so some slight seeing as well as relax. Due to when DP needs to take his DS to university and when my DDs birthday is we are quite constrained on dates - would need to leave either 9th, 10th or 11th September.

Does anyone have suggestions for where to stay and/or things to do? I am thinking of the south side at the moment but can be persuaded otherwise easily :)

Envy My favourite holiday place!

Peschiera is lovely and on the main train line, we went to Verona for the day, I think you can go to Milan too but it would be a long journey. Lovely restaurants etc.
Also Bardolino and Garda Town itself are just great for eating, drinking and relaxing. You can get the ferries from town to town, they crisscross the lake all day, a good way of sightseeing and no need for a car.

We stayed in Malcesine on our honeymoon. It was beautiful and a good base for getting around.

Malcesine is a nice compromise , about 2/3 up on the east cost with easy access to ferries and mountains. dreadful traffic midsummer but that should be ok in September . Sirmione at the southern point is quite romantic, Riva at the top a bit more touristy but not so much as Garda and Peschiera.

Thank you everyone - DP and I will have a look later.

In general do people hire cars? I am quite happy to not hire one but suspect DP might like to.

Probably best not , although we did last time and actually gave up driving from one end of the lake to the other one day because it was so congested and took forever. Plenty of ferries and buses to get around.
