when to turn baby carseats forward?

Hi - I have 8 month old twins and wondering when to
A) turn their carseats to forward facing
B) buy next size up

The babies are not heavy for their age but their bodies are long. So the feet are already touching the backseats.

Does this mean they should be turned around so their legs can hang out and not be squished?

They should face back for at least a year. Their legs being a little bent is not an issue at all and should be perfectly comfortable. Keep them in th baby seat as long as possible. DS was a big bruiser but still got at least 13 months out of his. Its only an issue if the back of their heads are above the top of the seat iirc

Legs don't matter, the head is. Only move them when their head is starting to go over the top of their seats. Their head is the heaviest compared to the rest of the body and their neck is not strong enough to support them in case if an accident.

Even after that rearface sitting is safer. There are now seats available for the next stage and studies in Scandinavia show they are safer than forward facing.

DD - tall, 75th percentile, was in her seat until she was 14 months. We only moved because of the head getting over the top of the seat.

Most infant seats aren't designed to be used forward facing, so turning around the sears they are currently in is only an option if they are multistage seats.
