Just that really. Myself and teenage dd are going to fly to Naples (by plane..we're not magic!) and we would love to spend a day at Pompeii...how do you do it? Is it simple..anything to watch out for? Thanks. Smile

By train. It is around ten years since I did that journey, but I do remember it being very easy! Herculaneum is worth visiting too.

It's a lovely trip on a commuter train, it takes about 40 mins along the coast from Naples to Sorento and stops at Pompeii and Herculaneum on the way as I recall. You can also take a day trip on the boat from Naples to Capri. Naples was one of my favourite mini breaks, hope you have a great time.

The station at is right opposite the gates into Pompeii. I would advise getting a guide to show you round, it makes a huge difference. Also, there aren't many toilets at the site - ridiculous for such a world famous tourist attraction, so go when you arrive. And take plenty of water as it is very hot and there is no shade. Don't wear flip flops or heels either as it is very uneven underfoot.

Pompeii had been on my bucket list for years and we finally went last year and it was superb.

The British Museum have released an App to go with the new exhibition . We recently went to the life broadcast of the opening lectures and it was wonderful. Get there as early as you can and try to beat the coaches .its a fab place.
App HERE
We also climbed Mount Vesuvius but the toilets there were beyond grim. Shock
Have a wonderful time .

We managed 2 hrs in Naples and left (this was about 20 yrs ago mind you) and stayed in Sorrento instead. There's a little narrow-gauge railway line from Naples to Sorrento that also serves Pompei.

We took a boat trip from Sorrento to Capri one day - and a bus journey to the Amalfi coast another.

Bunbaker · 08/07/2013 22:46

It isn't a narrow gauge railway. It's full size and runs local trains from Sorrento to Pompeii, Naples and Herculaneum.

malteserzz · 08/07/2013 22:49

We stopped in Naples on a cruise last year and took the train to Pompeii it was so hot on the train ! Man selling fans for a euro did a roaring trade !

Assisi is really lovely, although they have had an earthquake since I was there, so I don't know what state it's in now...maybe someone else can advise?

mistlethrush · 09/07/2013 08:47

It is narrow gauge. More info on that here. The trains are full size - but the line is narrow.

MumnGran · 09/07/2013 08:52

Parts of Sorrento are lovely ... I would choose over Naples, but thats just me.
As explained, excellent train links to Pompeii. (Herculaneum is quieter and equally impressive IMO) Also worth going over to Capri if you have the chance......and the Amalfi drive is just spectacular.

You have evoked so many memories that I am off to look at options for a late hol Smile

Pompeii is pretty impressive and the train is a beautiful and easy journey. Sorrento is very touristy (there are often big cruise liners there in summer) but still quite Italian.

Bluebell99 · 09/07/2013 09:06

We were warned to be careful in Naples as it is renowned for pickpocketers. We stayed on the outskirts of Sorrento, very easy to catch the regular train to Pompeii. The museum in Naples is supposed to be very good.

NewFairy · 09/07/2013 09:11

Sorrento is gorgeous. Yes it's very touristy but still really pretty, and choose the right bar and you have amazing views over the bay to Naples with Pompeii beyond.

The Foreigners Bar is particularly goood. We are going back in September, and can't wait.

Bunbaker · 09/07/2013 19:02

We stayed just outside Sorrento last year. The hotel was really nice but the location wasn't. The streets are narrow and full of traffic and there is nowhere nice and peaceful to walk. The traffic free areas of Sorrento are fine but the suburbs aren't because of the noisy traffic. Several people in our hotel said that they found Capri disappointing and that it was horrifically expensive, so we went down to the port and booked a trip to Amalfi. We enjoyed that but got ripped off buying ice-creams in Amalfi.

We had been to Lake Garda the year before and have to admit that Sorrento was not a patch on Lake Garda.

It sounds like we didn't enjoy our holiday. We did, but we like somewhere a little quieter.

showtunesgirl · 09/07/2013 19:06

OP, make sure you have bottles of water and hats when going to Pompeii. There is very little in the way of shelter and it gets very, very hot there. Several people die every year visiting Pompeii because they underestimate how big and how hot the place is!

Herculaneum is much smaller and has better preserved mosaics as well so well worth a look.

If you are in Naples, make sure you go eat pizza at Da Michele. They only do two types of pizza but it's absolutely sublime.

Howstricks · 09/07/2013 19:23

And thanks some more! I saw a documentary on Herculaneum fairly recently..it looks fascinating. I will hold tight to my purse, wear a hat and definately follow up the recommendation for pizza. Smile
