Dubai

We are ending a family holiday with a few days in Dubai. We have just booked a table in a very smart restaurant for one evening, and the acknowledgement has been returned saying no under 21's allowed.

DS is 21 and DD is not 21 under next May - although like most 20 year olds, it would be difficult to guess.

On the basis we're a family, will obviously be appropriately dressed, is it worth the risk of being asked for ID? She is unlikely to drink - rarely does - but it seems that has no bearing.

Anyone got any experience/advice?

Thanks.

Do Not Break The Law In Dubai.

Especially if you don't have a penis.

ajandjjmum · 03/07/2013 12:28

Totally get that colditz - she absolutely wouldn't drink.

But access to a restaurant?

Do. Not. Break. The. Law. In. Dubai.

ajandjjmum · 03/07/2013 12:41

OK guys. The law is that under 21's cannot drink alcohol. Understood.

The restaurant has a rule that under 21's are not allowed after 6 pm. It is not law. It is a rule.

Or should I say It. Is. Not. The. Law. But. A. Rule. Grin

I'd be grateful for anyone who has knowledge/experience to give me some advice.

Don't even break rules. It would be very very easy for them to make a claim that she had broken the law, and very very difficult for her to defend herself.

ajandjjmum · 03/07/2013 13:04

Thanks colditz - that's what I need to know!

I would choose to dine instead in a different restaurant. Rule breaking of any sort in Dubai is very much frowned upon.

Never ever ever been asked for ID in any restaurant/club/bar in Dubai and neither has anyone with me (friends, cousins etc) and parents been there 9 years now and I go for long periods.

Have also been taking dd to high resturants in Dubai since she was 5 months (now 8) although I am aware of a handful with no children rules.

I would personally definitely go, its prob either a high end restaurant or one that is 'club like' so wants no children there.

Dubai has a massive drinking and clubbing culture and unless you do something pretty bad to get the attention of the police then you will be fine!!!

What restaurant is it?

ajandjjmum · 03/07/2013 20:02

It's on the 122nd floor of a fairly new building kelly!!! Grin

Then absolutely stand by what I say. ( I know exactly where you mean lol, my parents have been already)
They are not going to ask for ID anyway they just don't want young family's going.
You are not going to get into any trouble or be arrested for having a meal. Police don't go around hotels and restaurants looking for people having a drink to arrest'!

The police will rightly kick your ass if you are doing seriously wrong and hammered and being so bad that the hotel or restaurant feels the need to call them.

Every Friday brunch in Dubai is a 4 hour all you can eat food and all you can drink champagne fest ( and every other drink you could possibly want )at nearly every hotel ( especially the high end ones! al quasar and the Fairmont amongst best)and not many come out sober! This is a huge huge expat thing and the police are not waiting to arrest people every week.

Have a great time and don't listen to the scaremongering!!!!

high end restaurants have this age policy thing to stop people taking their very young children, Dubai is so family friendly that you quite often share the restaurants with babies and screachy overtired toddlers.

I would go, you won't be breaking the law

ajandjjmum · 03/07/2013 22:12

So my very sophisticated DD aged 20 and 4 months hopefully won't have a problem. And I doubt they'll want ID off me and DH! Grin

Thanks everyone - especially kelly for the inside knowledge.
