Where is the best place to sit on the plane?

I am going to book seats on a plane for our holiday to Greece, its a boeing something!

Can't have exit seats, so just a normal seat just debating where to sit! Is as near to the front really the best?

It will be me and DP (he is 6ft3 so slightly worried about how he will cope)>

Bit hard to give specific advice but why can't you have exit seats? For a tall person, either the very front row or the exit rows will have more leg room.

There's very little point being at the front of the plane, IMO, unless you've got hand luggage only, since all it means is you're going to be waiting longer for your bags to arrive. Although if you're flying into somewhere very busy, getting off the plane first might allow you to beat the queue through passport control.

SOme charter companies offer extra leg room seats which might help seeing as DP is tall. ( tell Tour operator that or plane company) You will not be able to have exit seats if you have a child in arms ( or with you) as only 'able bodied' people can occupy these seats. Also all hand luggage has to be stored away and murphys law says you will need some toy when you are sitting waiting to take off and you can't move.
If you can prebook seats ask if there are any seats of 2 ( as often you can stretch out a bit more ) most planes have a configuration of 3 and 3 seats or if larger 3 4 3 .
Agree re the sitting at front of plane it makes no difference and on arrival they might open the front and back doors! If travelling with non nappy children - suggest not far from toilets.
Happy Holidays !

behind the bulkheads near the wings may offer slightly more legroom

apronstrings · 03/06/2006 13:51

bulk head and aisle definately

This website might be of use to you, \link{http://www.uk-air.net/seatplan.htm#B\Air Uk}.

They have seating plans for the different Boeings and even if the company you are flying with is not listed you aircraft type might be listed under an other company.

First class!

Snort!

spacecadet · 04/06/2006 13:49

exit seats are the best as far as i know..much more legroom

Skribble · 04/06/2006 13:52

The Quantus link on that site gives very detailed plans that you can zoom in on.

cece · 04/06/2006 14:00

ime it is best to phone the airline direct and ask them!

You can't sit in exit seats if you have a child of any age sitting in the row with you.

My dh is 6' 7" so I know how it is, he usually takes up all my legroom as well as his own.

The worst thing is when the people in front of you tilt their seats back, think that should be banned on daytime shorthaul flights.

Snafu · 08/06/2006 21:08

Inside, I reckon.

Hur hur.

JanH · 08/06/2006 21:10

Given a choice (and enough legroom) I would sit in the very back row so I wouldn't have people behind kicking my seat and banging the tray up and down.

(Also they tend to go down nose-first.....sorry! sorry!)

JanH · 08/06/2006 21:13

(I am 6' and have the longest thighs in the world and can usually just about survive a 2-3 hour flight without screaming with cramp, except once on an Excel flight where my knees were jammed against the seat in front and luckily I was able to move - NB all rows are not identical!)

KathH · 08/06/2006 22:06

dh always makes us sit at the back - his argument is you never hear of planes reversing into mountains - sorry!

Blandmum · 08/06/2006 22:07

The smoothest ride will be up the front

Cam · 09/06/2006 08:05

Sorry JanH and KathH statistics prove that in an emergency (during take-off and landing) those nearest the front escape first.

Plus the back area is too near the toilets and they always smell.

Flying into a mountain? Doesn't matter where you sit on that one usually.

Blondilocks · 11/06/2006 15:56

I'm not really bothered where I sit, but prefer the aisle on long haul. I do like to be nearer to the front than stuck at the back.

Chandra · 11/06/2006 16:00

Ahem...I have been in Boeings whose backseats (last row in the plane) don't recline as the toilet/kitchen wall is straight behind them. Now... that make them cheaper in some cases but you feel more like sardine in them

fairydust · 11/06/2006 16:07

we just got back off hol and we'#re on a Boing757 and both there and back we have the very front seat dh is 6ft 2 dd is 4yrs and they had alot more room than the normal seats.

Also who are you booking you seats with? as usual when you pre-book them you can't actually specify which seats you want they just prebook you seating together.

Chandra · 11/06/2006 16:10

BTW I forgot to say that the space and configuration of the seats varies with each company, as they have a said of the number of seats they want to be crammed into the plane. An economy airline, offers not much hope but check if you are using a regular one.
