Cabin luggage - easy jet have reduced the dimensions

Hi everyone, We are travelling to Majorca in July and with the price of luggage, decided that two of us will pay for the 22kg and two of us will just take hand luggage.

We need to buy cabin luggage. When looking at the dimensions I find out that Easy Jet have just reduced their dimensions from 56cm to 50 and 45cm to 40.

We are travelling with Jet 2 and their dimensions are 56cm.

If I was to buy the cabin luggage at 55cm would this likely to change in the near future. Do all the airlines follow suit.

I think if I buy the luggage at 55cm in the long run I will save but not if they change.

purple I sympathise, this is so annoying! If only all airline would standardise, we have a loftful of various sizes - grrr!

Your post is a little misleading. from Easyjet website:-

You may carry one item of cabin baggage only, measuring a maximum 56 x 45 x 25cm (including wheels, pockets and handles).

Overhead locker space on board our aircraft is limited, which means on busy flights we’re not always able to fit everyone’s cabin bag on board. So to make things fair, we’re introducing a cabin bag guarantee from 2 July.

From 2 July, if you bring ONE piece of cabin baggage no bigger than 50 x40 x 20cm including handles and wheels, we guarantee it will always travel with you either in the overhead locker or, if necessary, under the seat in front of you.

You can still choose to bring ONE slightly bigger bag up to the maximum size of 56 x 45 x 25cm including handles and wheels, but on some busy flights your bag may have to go into the hold.

What I mean to say is that Easy Jet have changed the dimensions but they will honour their previous dimensions.

Just to be confusing, we are NOT travelling with Easy Jet, we are going with Jet 2.

If I was to buy Jet2's requirements, is this likely to change.

I would be amazed if Jet2 were able to make changes now that would affect travel as soon as July. If they do copy Easyjet the worst that would happen is that your bags could end up in the hold but at no extra cost to you.

Should I just buy really small luggage in case of future changes.

The reason I am just doing the Cabin baggage is to save money.

If every time I travel abroad, if I have to buy the appropriate Cabin bags, its defeating the object of saving money.

I would just buy smaller and learn to travel lighter. All airlines are gradually getting stricter. Many now have 15kg check in not 20/23kg as previously.

So if investing go smaller. Then you will be fine in the next few years with any alterations.

If possible use soft sided luggage for carry on. Something that has wheels but can be squished into the 'size cage' at check-in.
You don't need rigid luggage for carry-on.

Thanks for all your advice.

My idea is once I purchase the Cabin Luggage, I will be able to use if for lots of trips, saving money in the long run.
I have seen a bag from Argos, the worlds lightest Cabin Bag. Its £19.99. The dimensions are well within the criteria.

Personally I think the best hand luggage is a rucksack. That way if you travel only handluggage you are hand free, and if not your hands are free to pull later check in suitcases. There's nothing worse than dragging a large and small suitcase or different height handles when not needed

forevergreek - good point! when I travelled with DC when they were little I always used a rucksack, and also had a waistbelt pouch for passports & money etc as I get easily flustered and it helped me stay calm and organised.

We always travel with rucksacks as hand luggage. Easy to sling on your back or hang on the back of a pushchair, and as long as they aren't filled to the brim they will fit the smaller set of dimensions.

That bag is just 9.99 in argos now....
