When is a 2 year old not a 2 year old?

We are looking to book flights over Easter next year. My DS will turn 2 over the ten days we are away. So he'll be an infant on the way out; not on the way back.

Does anyone know how I book flights online for him? We are using BA. Will they consider him an infant both ways, or do we have to book 2 lots of tickets; a single for an infant on the way out and then a return with a child?

I believe they charge infant on the way out and child (with own seat) on the way back. You have to put Date Of Birth in as part of the booking procedure.

Are you planning to have him on your lap on the way out? Otherwise I think you can just book him a child ticket both ways - I am pretty sure I did that on Virgin with DS many years ago, as he had his second birthday away from home.

I would book as an infant, put in the DOB and see what the system does. You can back out before paying.

When we booked last year with First Choice the website asked for the children's ages on the return date.

Sorry just realised you said an airline so don't think my reply is of any use.

Yes infant out and child fare back. Same with older child who turns 13 when away, they pay child out and adult fare back.

I think, having been on BA website rather alot recently, that you can pay infant fare both ways. It is under their FAQs and I was surprised, and a bit miffed that I didn't check this when DD was on the cusp. That said it was a blessed relief to have her next to me and not jammed in on top.

It's actually clearly stated on the BA website:

Infants who become children during travelling

If you're travelling with an infant who reaches the age of two during their journey, your child will need their own seat for any flights on and after their 2nd birthday.

However, there is no charge for this; you will still only pay the infant fare for the entire journey.

As your infant will only be required to have a seat for part of your trip, this can't be booked online, so contact us and we'll be pleased to help you.

Thank you so much, everyone! The drop downs weren't working for us, so I had missed that section and booked. But I was in the 'cooling off' 24 hours when I read your message and able to call and change with no worries. Had to pay a £15 booking charge for booking on the phone, but saved £40 on the ticket so I'm thrilled.

Thanks mumsnet!
