I detest the sun and sitting on beaches and much prefer the idea of whale watchng and walking in crisp weather by day and lolling in cool boutique hotel by night. Iceland is only 2 hours flying time from the UK, anyone been? Wot's it like? TIA.

DH been - says fab, esp for kids (geysers/ponies/volcanoes/hot springs etc)
Expensive though

We went to Iceland for our honeymoon, and it was brilliant. As Pruni says, expensive, and a bit difficult if you're a vegetarian, but a fabulous place. Spectacular scenery, lovely friendly people (who mostly seem to speak English incredibly well), and just a lovely place to be. Can't wait to go back when the kids are a bit olderSmile. When we went, it was before Reykjavik got all trendy, but now there's that aspect to it too!

I used to live there. It's like living on the moon, especially in the winter when the sun barely rises over the horizon. It's all lava so no trees, at least none that I can remember. Pervasive smell of drying fish and sulphur. But Icelanders are incredibly friendly, well-read and sociable. They have a fascinating history, too. It will be daylight almost all the time at the moment so don't expect to get much sleep!

SenoraPostrophe · 30/05/2006 22:13

We went at Easter, and had a fantastic time but found eating out v expensive (even compared with other Nordic area countries) - Blue Lagoon fantastic, whale watching bumpy but amazing, geysers impressive. Dinner for 6 of us at a v good restaurant was £350 (no puddings) and dd who is 2 eats v little - though that did include a bottle of bolly. 3 take-away pizzas (nothing like as good as pizza express) were £65 delivered to our room. Hot dogs etc by geysers were fine though.

I thought you got midnight sun in Iceland (snigger).

Arabica · 05/06/2006 23:20

Have visited many times as DH is from this endearingly bonkers place. Yes, it's expensive, but it's so beautiful and different and the swimming pools are top notch. OK, they like to kill whales, but nobody's perfect. Try not to stay just in Reykjavik but visit some of the other wonderful sights. You'll get some ideas at \link{http://www.whatson.is/whats_on\this site} Have a lovely holiday.

went about 6 years ago
amazing place
but food was very very unexciting.
would definitely take bag loads of snacks, fruit bars etc, probably even cereals to eat in your accommodation.

I took a group trip out to Iceland in April. It was very windy at that time of year especially when we went to teh waterfall. The whole group loved the experience. Personally I didn't sample the nightlife that they refer to as the alcohol was so expensive. So evening wise after a meal out we geneally were back in our room reading and watching tv etc. Please note most hotels in Iceland do not provide tea and coffee making facilities in your room so take a travel kettle. You could eat cheaper if you shopped round. Mcdonals was about 7 pounds for a meal (so sort of double the price) a few of our group went to a local restaurant in Rejkavik for their meals as it was reasonable in price. A lot of people at loads in our breakfast which was included to tide them over because of the costings etc.

The Blue Lagoon was great and I can definitely recommend the mud pack which you can buy from teh shop, expensive but good.

Its definitely somewhere for an experience etc.

Good Luck
