What to do in SE France with a toddler

We're planning a two week camping trip to south east France in July. We have a 2 yo DS. We like hiking, swimming, and outdoorsy stuff, but also mooching around nice shops and cafes. Does anyone have any recommendations for things to see or do?

Where will you be based? SE France is pretty vague and my suggestions would not be the same on the coast as in Avignon or the Ardèche for example...

We discovered cycling when our first was about that age. I don't know what SE France is like for cycle paths but with your DS either in a trailer or on a bike seat you can still get out and about (we got a Hamax Siesta bike seat that tips up if they need a snooze). A backpack for carrying him too - if he's not too heavy can work for exploring too (one of mine hated the backpack and the other would have spent all day in it so I guess it's a matter of toddler taste).
The other discovery is the beach - most seaside beaches have restaurants that rent out beach loungers so you have shade and your own space on the beach. A Bucket and spade and you'll have a happy toddler for a few hours. Also, eating at one of these places means your DS can play in the sand when he gets bored of sitting at the table (if it's right next to your table). We always travelled with a small backpack of colours and books and whatever else kept DC amused while waiting for dinner/lunch.
We used a buggy til the age of 5 on holidays so that if we did eat out and it was late DC could climb into the buggy and sleep or we could have a walk after dinner - we didn't bring a buggy once as we thought she was too old for one and ended up buying one just for those after dinner strolls through the town.

We're thinking Provence, but will be driving so could make stops along the way.

The beaches sound fab. Will definitely look into that.
