Babies in the heat - any tips? What kit do I need?

We are going to a wedding in late August in southern Spain, when our twins will be 12mo, 9 months corrected. I think it may well be too hot for me, let alone the babies. How do you help babies manage the heat and sun? what kit (that you can pack and take on a plane, or buy there) is useful? I am thinking pool floats they can sit in, hats with neck shades, beach UV tents, protective swimsuits etc - recommendations please! We will be near a beach in a villa with a pool. I think the villa is airconditioned but I'd like not to have to cower inside for the whole trip...

Air con is a must for a break in the afternoon. Our twins took 3 days to acclimatise the first time we took them to the heat (6 months) but instantly loved it the second time (13 months). We took UV shades for the pushchairs as well so that they could have their morning nap while we had an hour of sunning ourselves round the pool. We suncreamed them up before getting off the plane and took them a little battery operated fan each to cope with getting out of the airport and to the hotel. To be honest, I worried more than I needed to because they were happy as larry going from November misery to sunny happiness.

don't forget the swim nappies!

the UV is slightly weaker in late august but you still want to keep them out of direct sun as much as possible. If you are by the sea there should be a daytime breeze.

Thanks. Has anyone tried those hats with neck shades? Do I need some?

When DD was about that age we went to Australia and I did get those hats with neck shades. They seemed like a good idea but I found that at that age she would take off and throw away almost any hat if we weren't watching her like a hawk. We lost a hat on the very first day, which I replaced and the same thing happened and again.. I think we lost about four hats in a fortnight. I found it better to have a sunshade on the stroller.

We lived in Barbados when my brother was little - talc! blissful and cooling before bed, and indeed any time, on sticky little limbs.

Thanks!

Agree with 5foot5 on the hats. I'm still training DD at 2.2yo to keep her hat and her sunglasses on. She managed to lose her hat last weekend!

Tbh, spain isn't that hot in August. Children are very good at adapting. DD survived singapore at 17mo. She just kept asking for water all day. What we did is just avoid the midday sun. I think it's the sunburn that's more worrying.

Children adapt quite well to the heat, better than adults I think.

Your babies will be fine, my DD grew up in Turkey and she coped very well. You have thought of most things and with a pool and air conditioning you will all be fine Smile

Just make sure your little ones drink lots of water, buy bottled water though not tap water.

I would recommend getting a black out buggy shade/cover if they do them for a twins pushchair. It was great to be able to put DS in it and let him sleep knowing the sun couldn't get to him. I cannot recall where we got ours from (sorry), but it looked like this - www.babysecurity.co.uk/products/4781/Koo%252DDi-Pack-It-Stroller-Sun-And-Sleep-Shade-Charcoal%7B47%7DGreen.html I am sure the locals thought we were being over the top(!) but I liked knowing he was in the shade completely.

Is the pool heated? Probably not I guess in August. We went to Spain in June a few years ago and DS appreciated his wetsuit (which we had for swimming lessons anyway). It might not be that warm in the pool.

We did try a pop-up sun tent but he didn't really like it and it was quite hot in there.

He didn't like the hat with the neck cover either, so we bought him a cotton bandanna and tied it tightly on his head. It meant he had some protection on this head.

If they are up for paddling in the sea (if they are at that stage) maybe those 'surfing' type shoes to avoid them treading on anything they might not want to. You can buy those there cheaply.

Gosh I sound like I treat DS like a little doll! I guess I just took heed of the burning warnings!!

Good luck.

We used to bring along one of those pop up tents, they are quite light, you can put toys in it and then your DTs can play in that when it's too hot.
