We are staying with family in august for 2 weeks based near grasse - (inland from cannes and Antibes)

they have offered to watch dd while me and dh go off for a couple of nights by ourselves.

Where should we go? We have been in previous years and have already seen the nearby places eg valbonne, gourdon, nice, cannes, Antibes.

So we're looking for somewhere within a couple of hours drive or train ride that is nice to stay for a couple of nights. We like walking, nice food and scenery but don't have a huge budget. Not overly bothered about going to beaches or pools as we can do that whilst staying with family.

We did look at going to paris on the train but 5-6 hours seemed like too long to travel for such a short trip.

How about Aix-en-Provence? Lovely town, lots to see and great cafe bars to sit and watch the world go by. (Bit biased, I used to live there!)

Gassin and Ramatuelle are lovely. Villefranche Sur Mer? Take the train into Italy?

mycatoscar · 29/05/2013 16:23

Thanks ladies - will take a look at those places and try to persuade dh.

St Jean Cap Ferrat is lovely, as is Monaco, I preferred the old part to Monte Carlo but it's so small you can walk from one end to the other. Mougins has lots of nice restaurants and Valbonne is very pretty, has some nice restaurants and there is a weekly market.

msmorgan · 30/05/2013 22:01

Oops, just noticed you have already been to Valbonne.

mycatoscar · 31/05/2013 16:51

Thanks Msmorgan, yes Valbonne is lovely, but just 15 minutes drive from where we are staying with family so have been there lots. Will have a look at St Jean Cap Ferrat. My mum has also suggested driving down to ventimiglio or san remo in Italy but not sure dh is that adventurous! Between us we speak about 5 words in Italian LOL.

Paradou next to Les Baux de Provence is in an alternative part of Provence. Really good foodie bistrot in the village. Walking in the Alpilles. Can easily visit Arles, Avignon,Pont du Gard.

the villages perchés in the hills above Nice - Cap Ferrat - Monacco are wonderful. You could bade yourself in Eze and explore from there. Great almond croissants in nearby La Turbie Smile

Great cycling in area if you have it can hire bikes.

enjoy
