Oh, bk, I've only just seen that they've been cancelling flights again - hope you have a nice safe easy flight and a good time when you get there. xxx

bossykate · 31/01/2004 21:03

thanks, janh. i'm bricking it, even though i know i am more likely to get into a road accident on the way to the airport than get involved in a terrorist attack. i've got to do something about this job after mat leave

BK, I had to fly back to the US on BA during the height of the worries over xmas & new year's when the flights were getting cancelled. I was worried for days & even came down with a fever on the day we flew out (partly stress-related no doubt) but the flight was packed & it was uneventful. Best of luck.

prufrock · 31/01/2004 22:54

Oh you poor thing. Can't you think of the flight as one of the few opportunities you are going to get of putting your feet up and watching slushy movies for 8 hours? And of course you'll have to get to teh airport extra early to get through security, so whilst you're there waiting you my as well treat yourself to a preflight massage (do BA do them or is it only Virgin)

SofiaAmes · 31/01/2004 23:39

At least ba are really nice nowadays. I always fly them and they are so good with the kids and always give us a bulkhead and don't make us wait in line and play with the kids etc. etc.

suedonim · 01/02/2004 00:37

Lots of sympathy, BK. Ds1 and his dw flew back to LA at New Year, during the last lot of cancellations. Armed security even removed a man off their flight at gunpoint. I wasn't a happy bunny until I heard they had landed safely.

PS Have you tried Bach's Rescue Remedy, to help you cope? It really does work and I'd recommend it.

bossykate · 01/02/2004 06:25

thank you, ladies. i'm sure everything will be fine. must go and pack now

bk, thought I'd post here just in case you get a chance to log on in your hotel. I really noticed this time that I was much, much more nervous of everything when I was pregnant. I didn't even like walking across Clifton Suspension Bridge at 8 months pregnant. I mean, I really hated it and had to talk myself into walking across because ds wanted to. It's absolutely not dangerous either, so my feelings were illogical and unreasonable but quite affecting and real at the time. Maybe we are more protective of ourselves when we're pregnant? Anyway, hope you have a good trip and I'm sure you will get there and back safely.

Quackers · 01/02/2004 20:39

HI BK, I was cabin crew for BA for 4 yrs on those routes and throughout 9/11. I had to fly 2 days after the event to US leaving my 9 month old and it was tough, but believe me, if there is any threat, they don't go. They are one of the very few airlines I will fly with!!! Have a safe trip chuck.xxxx

WWW hit it on the head about worrying more when you're pregnant IMHO - but she's implying that you maybe a Mumsnet addict

Surely not ?! Seriously, hope the trip went well and you'll be safely back soon.

tomkitty · 03/02/2004 21:17

Haven't heard any terrible news -glad to think you got there safely.

BK, I was thinking of you today. Earning less isn't that bad you know. I bet my dh earns less than your dh (ooh, playground stuff!) and I went freelance, cut my days drastically and now earn about a third less than I did before, but I don't really notice any difference in our standard of living. My ds only goes to nursery three mornings a week and it's much less stressful. Could you be a consultant? I think if you can, working for yourself is the way to go. I bet you'd be a great consultant.

aloha · 04/02/2004 21:00

I agree with BA being safe. Our BA plane got broken into on the ground in Turkey while there was a terrorism scare on there. The Turkish authorities wandered through with a dog, and said, 'it's safe, everybody get on'., but the pilot refused and wouldn't fly the plane until a specialist team flew in from London, triple checked the plane and gave it the all clear the following day. Luckily we managed to get on an earlier flight, but it did give me confidence in BA.

bossykate · 04/02/2004 22:21

hi everyone, down and safe after a very uneventful flight! just have to get back home now.

thanks very much for all these comments - i really appreciated them, i was very miserable about this trip.

glad to hear mumsnet endorsement of ba safety procedures.

www, i agree being pregnant makes me feel more vulnerable, plus have been much more fearful generally since having ds, plus i really didn't want to go on this trip in the first place. i just don't want to be away from the family for a week. ds is noticing more when i am gone and missing me and he can articulate his feelings. it is heartbreaking.

aloha, thanks for the vote of confidence on my consulting abilities however, in my line of work moving to consultancy would probably mean longer hours and more travel!

i bet my dh earns less than your dh

How weird BK I'm sure I posted on this thread but it's not here

Glad you are home safely xx

Tinker · 04/02/2004 23:10

Hurray, glad you're back bk

Marina · 05/02/2004 11:48

Glad you're back safe and sound bk!
WWW, I had to cling on to the side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge when I was pg and visiting Bristol. I REALLY felt I was somehow going to fall off it...

Quackers · 05/02/2004 12:53

Come and see us with bump on the July thread and catch up!!xx

aloha · 05/02/2004 13:16

Come on BK, you must have loads of extremely expensive skills! I know I could never fully comprehend what you do but there surely must be a way to use them for yourselves? You must be very high powered/clever to get send abroad, surely?
Less than 20K????

bossykate · 08/02/2004 13:23

i see i expressed myself really badly in my previous message! actually, i got home yesterday! have had really s**y jetlag this time due to total inability to stay up late at the american end because of pg tiredness.

just wanted to say thanks again for these kind messages, they really did help.

aloha, your dh beats mine by a snidge (i.e. yes my dh earns a bit more, not much more though)!
yes i could be a consultant but not on a WAH, or part-time basis. it would be well remunerated but would give worse work/life balance than i have now, so not much point really. going three days would be an option, and in fact i will consider it after this round of mat leave. recent attempt to go to 4 days has been a miserable failure, though, and am now working f/t until going on mat leave in july.

thanks again everyone
