I haven't been to Almeria but I can recommend:

www.molinodesantillan.es/

(Not busy or big but very lovely)

Malaga (Picasso, castles and more) on doorstep and a bit of a beach nearby.

:)

I can help as my family have been going there for many many years (over 20!), although I only really know the coast north of Almeria City (there are other resorts in the south, too).

It's still relatively unspoilt, compared to much of the Spanish coastline, and has some nice unspoilt beaches, although they're not all great. But there's not a huge amount of culture (although you can drive up to Granada, and there are some good Moorish castles around - and some excellent Spaghetti Western sets...), But more importantly it will be very hot in August, so if you've got small kids might not be ideal.

Will you be buying a package or sorting something out yourself? If you're buying a whole holiday, some of the Mojacar beach resorts are probably your best bet; if you're renting a villa, then try and go for Agua Amarga, which is a lovely little fishing village in a really pretty cove - great beach and nice food too!

If you've got some places in mind, feel free to run them past me, and I'll see what I can remember...

Haven't been to Almeria either but last time we went to Spain we stayed near Motril (map \link{http://www.andalucia.com/maps/costadelsol.htm\here}) which is about halfway between Malaga and Almeria.

Where we were wasn't particularly lovely, but the beaches were OK, and it was v handy for getting to Granada, the Sierra Nevada and the \link{http://www.andalucia.com/villages/alpujarras.htm\Alpujarras} (Driving over Lemons area). All I know about Almeria is that they have a sort of Spaghetti Western theme park there!

Between Malaga and Motril are Nerja, Almunecar and Salobrena all of which are more seasidey but not madly touristy (mind you we were there in October, I guess August would be much busier).

Also it will be bleeding hot - hope you are prepared for that Smile

\link{http://spainforvisitors.com/archive/features/aa081501a.htm\Mini Hollywood} - says there are THREE spag western theme parks!

Another place we went to was \link{http://www.spaincostadelsol.co.uk/el%20tocral%20natural%20park.htm\El Torcal Nature Reserve} which is weird but v interesting.

Final bit of useful (?) information - we stayed \link{http://www.bbqwithstyle.com/C156.html\here} and if you click on the "area" link there are some pictures of other places in the area.
