Family Pub that screens football in South London?

Can't believe I have to ask for a pub recommendation, how old and boring have I got!

I want to take DH out to watch the West Ham/Liverpool game on Saturday. Dh would be quite happy to watch it at MILs, but this is the first time in 28years or something that WH have got this far (and probably won't do it again for another 28 years.....) so I think he deserves to go out, soak up the atmosphere and have a drink. I'd arranged for my DSis to come over and have the DCs so we can go out but DH has come over all emotional and wants DSs to watch it too.

So......I need a pub that will show the match with a garden, child tolerant - play area would be nice but not essential, I have to keep DS2(5.11) and DD(2.5) amused as I think they'll lose interest in the footy pretty quickly! I live in Streatham, but if it's a nice place I'll drive and I'll even consider going around Upton Park (I would have driven to Cardiff if we could have got tickets)

Any ideas?

What about the Windmill on Clapham Common? Last time i went the scren was in the family-friendly conservatory area. No garden to the pub itself, but it backs on to the common v v close to the playground.

Blu · 10/05/2006 12:38

And what's that pub that is at the top of Dulwhich Woods, with Sydenham down the hill behind it the other side? Dulwich Wood something? If you were going up the hill towards C palace park from W Dulwich / dulwich village, instead of turning R at the top to go along the top of C palace park, you would turn left, and it is there on the left a little way along. I don't know if they have a screen, but it is a great pub to take kids to as it has a lovely big grassy garden out the back with a climbing structure. Does ok food.

serenity · 10/05/2006 13:25

The Windmill's a good idea, thanks Blu. We've actually been there preDD when DH used to play football on the common. DSis is coming too, so we can take turns at the sandpit Grin

Strangely enough I've been to that other one too, a long long time ago when I was pg with DS1. Might take a long detour tomorrow, and see if it does have a screen.

Thanks Blu, some good ideas there.

Dulwich Wood House - they've removed the climbing frame for some bizarre reason.

Blu · 10/05/2006 14:31

Do we know more about the pubs than the schools in our area?

hey - we should have a SE London meet in Dulwich Wood House one w/e afternoon! Shame about the climbing thing, though.

CountessDracula · 10/05/2006 14:37

The Hare and Hounds in Sheen has a big beer garden with kids play area (not a brilliant one but I think they may have jsut redone it) and they show the footie

serenity · 10/05/2006 16:58

I used to know a lot about pubs in Stockwell and the West End (not much good now) but definitely know more about schools in my area. I need to get out more Smile

I like the idea of a meet up in the pub Blu. Sunny afternoon, cold drink, good company and the DCs annoying someone on the other side of the garden, bliss.

Thanks for heads up Jan, and I'll keep the Sheen one as a possible, thanks CD Smile

On the assumption you don't actually want to watch the football yourself, why not go to the Dulwich Wood House, have a drink and maybe a meal there, and take your DD and DS2 to see the art exhibition in Sydenham Hill Wood (it's on between 10am and 5pm). If you're not that keen on conceptual art, just enjoy the wood. (It's going to be featured the first Springwatch programme in June - someone from the BBC was filming there yesterday.)

Blu · 12/05/2006 12:08

Hallgerda - more about the exhibition, please? Sounds really interesting!

motherinferior · 12/05/2006 12:37

Sydenham Wood is utterly marvellous.

I had a sort of date once that ended in that pub...

serenity · 12/05/2006 12:48

For a second I thought you meant you had a date that ended in the wood Shock

(and then I look back at my own 'youth' and think, pot, kettle, black)

Sadly no Wink

The Inferiorettes got all sniffy about the wood last time we went - "mummy, it's ^prickly"" - but that was in winter. Be good to enforce Nature on them in nicer weather.

dinosaure · 12/05/2006 12:50

LOL at you two.

Sorry can't help with pub recommendations!

We are having lots of people round to watch it at our house. We are divided into those who are Forever Blowing Bubbles and those who will Never Walk Alone.

serenity · 12/05/2006 13:32

Dh actually wanted to do a BBQ and have lots of people over to watch (what a way to jinx it!) but we would have had to do it at MILs and for various reasons that went out the window.

MI - Taking my three to any woods reinforces the idea that I have feral children. Last time they ended up running around screaming, with very large sticks, being hunted by a strange invisible monster(should I sue JJ Abrams for pinching it for Lost?)

Blu, the exhibition's on this weekend only. Saturday would probably be the best day to go to see the art at its best, and early afternoon is likely to be a good time to see the performance art (unfortunately I don't know the timetable). If you go in through the Crescent Wood Road entrance and take the path to the tunnel entrance there will be someone there selling programmes.

It's conceptual art - the title of the exhibition is "Eco Vandalism" (taken from the one unfavourable comment on last year's exhibition, "The Art of Permanence and Change".) Last year's exhibits included a bench with someone inside, a museum curator with a case of curiosities including Bluebeard's key, a tree covered in stickers with teddy bears hanging from it, a performance piece involving a trapeze artist up the cedar tree and a really big spider's web. The exhibition is organised by \link{http://www.lookoutpost.co.uk/\lookoutpost} (John Deller and Helen Morse-Palmer).

motherinferior, the wood's looking pretty good at the moment, with lots of bluebells. We do occasionally hack back the brambles to give the other vegetation a chance...

Belo · 12/05/2006 14:13

I'm boycotting the Dulwich Woodhouse. Last time we went there was a sudden downpour, the covers were not on the outside area, and they have a strictly no kids inside policy. We all got soaked. I'll forget my boycott next time its sunny. Wonder why they took the climbing frame down? dd1 will be most disapointed.

The Rosendale in West Dulwich allows kids in. No play area, but there's a big screen and they do OK pizzas. There's a small garden area, but not really one to do running around in.

It's not perfect. I'm definitely keen to hear what other people recommend.

Belo · 12/05/2006 14:14

Just had a brainwave: the Dog and Greyhound in Dulwich village. Big garden at the back. Always loads of kids. Half decent food. TVs inside.

Blu · 13/05/2006 14:30

WE were at the Dog and grehound last w/e, for Sunday lunch!

Thanks Hallgerda - that sounds right up our street - might go tomorrow...have overplanned ourselves today.

serenity · 14/05/2006 22:50

Thanks everyone for your ideas.

As it happend we ended up staying in and having a drink at home. Probably a good thing seeing how tense Dh got throughout it Grin Would have all been too much for the poor dear in public.

However I shall definitey use your suggestions later in the summer, as I'm determined to have a few nice Sunday pub lunches, so thank you again.

Who was your dh supporting?

Blu · 15/05/2006 11:46

We went to Dulwich Wood House on Sunday.

Still a great place to have a drink in the garden after a nice walk in Sydenham Woods, but our food took 50 mins to arrive, and really wasn't up to much, for the price. (To be fair, they gave us a refund because of the wait, but I was pleased I hadn't paid for it, iyswim).

serenity · 15/05/2006 13:41

Commiserations. I thought WH played brilliant and it should have gone to reply rather than penalties. My Dh is a Liverpool fan and went to the game. He's very happy.
