hello from the july thread! dh and i are thinking about taking ds away for a week before baby comes- due 9 july. ds will be 3 next month. seeing as this is really about giving him and us a real holiday family before all hell breaks out in our household (of course i could have an angel baby but....) i was thinking of either sands or bedruthan in mid-late May. what do you reckon? too expensive for what it is- warm enough to enjoy cornwall- not too grim for adults? i am not a snob but i do like my looxuries but i am fast of the opinion that if ds is happy then i am too. be grateful for any other ideas you might have. i wanted somewhere with loads to do for him, which is why we ditched the continent idea. never been to centerparcs but dh turned pale when i suggested it. thanks

hi madgirl

oooh my name in a thread title!

you must have already seen this? which is why you're asking me?

"if ds is happy then i am too" - that sums it up for us too and why we did enjoy the holiday even despite the relative lack of adult "luxury".

but we got a brochure/newsletter thing from them the other day and they are tarting up the rooms and the restaurant, which i suppose were the areas which we most noticed as needing a bit of a lift.

actually, getting the stuff from them reminded us what a beautiful part of the world it is, and we're quite tempted to go back!

to answer your questions, imo, it's not cheap, but not too expensive for what you get (e.g. compare the cost to somewhere like Moonfleet Manor or Woolley Grange - certainly better value than the latter).

i think it would be beautiful in that part of the world in may - it really is in a gorgeous area.

in terms of whether it's grim for adults. well, "grim" is perhaps a little too harsh. i certainly wouldn't go there for an adult holiday or romantic break.

if you set your expectations that it is a hotel for kids where they let adults stay perhaps you wouldn't be disappointed?

sorry, i haven't been to sands or centerparcs.

hth and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

yes, i read your thread and decided to go straight to the horse's mouth so to speak! thanks bk for coming back to me. how old was dd/ds (sorry can't remember) when you went in May? did you use the baby listening. i am not sure about that, i was thinking should we go to bedruthan and go s/c and then just chill out in the eve?? i would be terrified of ds waking up and us not being there, we are just working on getting our first "through the night" sleep for 9 months and i would hate to go back to square one. also- not as i dh and i are going to be tanking it in the bar as i'm pregnant thanks.also- where are you- did it take forever to get there?

madgirl, it is a shame you dh went pale at the thought of Centreparcs. I went once with a 2 yr old and 6 month old and we are just going back in 10 days (they are now nearly 5 and nearly 3) CP is great for both adults and kids! There are beauty treatments and other things for grown-ups, kids clubs and good babysitters as well as the pool and other activities for kids. I felt great going out in the evening to the 'posh' restaurant as we had a babysitter (vetted) in our villa and didn't have to rely on baby listening. Do look into it, your dh maybe pleasently suprised. The Exective accommadation is nice and the bath is big enough for a family!!

Madgirl, I have been to Bedruthen Steps three times and am vaguely thinking about going back this year.I think it is good value low season, though I wouldn't pay school hol prices. My two ,3 and 4 adore it and are always asking to go back. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and have a fantastic view of the sea. The beach is lovely and usually quiet. We have been in April and Sepember and have always had reasonable weather so I would think late May would be very pleasant. It's certainly not grim (though it looks it a bit from the outside!) The food is good and we enjoy just having our evening meals in peace.

DSW · 23/01/2004 14:42

I'm with Crunchie - Centre Parcs is great!!

Allegra · 23/01/2004 14:47

Forgot to say ,if you dont trust the baby listening there's an evening kids club so you can leave your ds to play while you have your meal. I was very happy with the baby listening but used the club one night when ds1 refused to go to sleep.

Hi Madgirl, we're all coming over from July!!!Just so you know what centre parcs is about - It's fab!!! DO NOT THINK OF BUTLINS!!!! We have been twice and have booked to go again (for same reasons as you) in April. I like my luxuries too and always book an exec lodge where you get a jacuzzi etc... It's so beautiful and loads to do. DD adores it. We have a babysitter come to our lodge so we can go out too! I end up having lots of treatments and I am intent on having a 'mum to be' massage this time. It's not crowded, it;s peaceful, the staff are great and I always feel refreshed coming back!
Good luck wherever you choose!!!!

Quackers · 23/01/2004 14:58

OOh Crunchie, you're another avid fan of CP's like me !!!
Can't beat it. I should get a job in PR for them!

nutcracker · 23/01/2004 15:00

I would love to go to centre parcs but isn't it really expensive ????
Went on the Bedruthan steps web site too but don't think i can afford that either.

nutcracker · 23/01/2004 15:01

Also meant to say, I have trouble accessing the centre parcs web site, have tried several times but it never works.

DSW · 23/01/2004 15:05

Niutcracker - it can be expensive - but the more of you that go the cheaper it is because you just pay for the "Apartment, so the more adults in it, the cheaper it is. Have you got freinds or family that could go at the same time - to split the costs?

It is self catering so you can buy all your food before you get there and just eat out for that special evening or something. The pool is completely free for the whole stay and you can use as much as you like. You can hire bikes there to get around - but if you have your own even better. It is definatley worth a look at - you might be suprised at the price. HTH

nutcracker · 23/01/2004 15:07

I will definatly try the site again later

Quackers · 23/01/2004 15:30

Hiya, it depends when you go. We're going end April/Beg May for 5 days in a Lakeside Exec Lodge and it's £460 ish for all of us! I think it's quite good. It is a place you can go year round and if you want it a little cheaper, go in Feb/Mar, or Oct/Nov. Standard lodges are great too and are very reasonable then! I think the first time we paid about £250 for 5 days!
Which site are you accessing? www.centerparcs.com
link is too long for me to do!

nutcracker · 23/01/2004 15:37

I've just been on the site and it worked perfectly this time. I had a quick look at prices and they aren't as bad as i thought. Anyway i've requested a brochure.

Quackers · 23/01/2004 15:39

Good for you Nutcracker, hope we've helped!!!

Crunchie · 23/01/2004 15:41

I think CP is quite expensive, certainly the activities and things soon add up. However in comparison to Bedruthan Steps I think it is cheaper (I have never checked it out) and I like the privicy of Self Catering. We are planning to use the pool loads, to go for bike rides, to use the little cinema (they loved the free sweets!), I think we'll have a babysitter one afternoon so we can go to the spa (it's only £4.50 and hr for a babysitter) and maybe one evening? We are taking loads of yummy food and booze and will chill in front of the telly or playing board games We are going to try to stick to a budget of £100 (we have £50 of spa vouchers which were my X-mas pressie) Personnaly I think that should be great for a family of 4.

By the way Quackers I know the PR for Centre parcs!!! I have met in in my last job as (please don't hate me for this) we got a free weekend as part of a press trip to check out holidays with very young children!!! This time I am paying for it!!!

DSW · 23/01/2004 15:41

Lets all book up for the same weekend - will make it even more fun!!! (Only Joking of course??)

Nutcracker - which one would be nearest to you?

nutcracker · 23/01/2004 15:42

The sherwood forest one I think.

madgirl · 23/01/2004 15:44

ooh quacks, which one are you going to?!!! wouldn't it be fab to meet up? (sorry if you think that is a hideous idea!)
i am quite keen on centerparcs tho dp is a funny old stick- was bought up on a houseboat and is a real inverted snob - but is it really sporty? i am not sporty at all........

OP posts:
DSW · 23/01/2004 15:45

That's the one we go to. You really won't be disappointed, but like Crunchie says it can get expensive with all the extra's you can do but have to pay for.

Crunchie - Good Idea about the budget why don't I ever think of things like that??

Ooooohhh....lovely picnics by the lakes....bbq's on your patio....

Will be booking up myself this year I think

DSW · 23/01/2004 15:46

Madgirl - Can be as sporty as you want it to be, but you do either have to alk everywhere or ride your bike!! Quite good fun after a few glasses of wine

DSW · 23/01/2004 15:47

I mean "walk" not alk!!

nutcracker · 23/01/2004 15:49

Dp has just said "it's a pile of crap" he has never been there though. It's a good job it's me who makes the holiday desicions then

DSW · 23/01/2004 15:50

Leave it at home!!! Whan are you planning on going - we can turn it into a Mumsnet Meetup - without the DP's/DH's!!

DSW · 23/01/2004 15:51

Sorry everyone my typing is absolute crap today. Glad it's friday!!! CHEERS!!
