Can I take a box of baby formula on holiday?

This may sound like a silly question but am I allowed to take an unopened box of baby formula with me on holiday or will security take it thinking I've smuggled drugs in it?

doubt it - only check for what you can take in to the country you are going regards foodstuff. I'd take the sachets and layer them through the luggage and ready made cartons for the flight.

I did. Unopened the can is still sealed. I would

cas73 · 02/05/2006 22:34

I did. And I have also brought back opened ones. I guess if they ever question it, they could always try some!!

more likely to get into difficulties because it's milk product, than because they suspect its drugs. having said that I have taken formula in all kinds of form abroad on many occassions. take it, if they object look suprised.

I got stopped in Jamaica with an unopened tin and they were fine about it,did get raised eyebrows though and I thought she was going to confiscate.
We left it and some baby food there(for our maids grandaughter)

meant to say,so I don't know about bringing it back.I suspect Customs have got more than formula to worry about on flights from Jamaica.

opened package with white powdery stuff coming in from Jamaica?

get the sniffer dog 'round there.

blueteddy · 02/05/2006 23:00

I did!

I always used to, sometimes would only take the foil pack and not the cardboard box that said what it was. I was never stopped. have never tried bringing it back though as i only ever used to end up with a small amount left at the end of the holiday and would throw it away rather than pack it. Would suggest ready made cartons for travelling though, they are much easier and you dont have to worry about keeping them cool.

Almost took a clear sandwich bag with washing powder abroard last year in my hand luggage thinking I could get some washing done while on holiday. Luckily I didnt othrewise that may have looked a bit suspicious Grin especially as if someone in our party gets stopped for a search it is usually me, guess i must look guilty!!

yes....we have a number of times and no-one has ever questioned it. For the flight I use the tommee tippee individual powder pots (from their website) they take up to 8oz of powder and fit neatly into the neck of most bottles under the teat so you can make it up when needed and doesn't go sour.

I did ful tin of sma and opened tin brought back...did wonder what I'd say if stopped, but figured a. I could point at 3 month old ds and b. make them up a bottle Grin

I've taken washing powder in a zip lock bag every holiday for 10 years. I've never been stopped - and even if I was they could take it, it's only about 50p worth.

My MIL brought icing sugar in a zip lock bag to the UK to ice our wedding cake (obviously thought we couldn't get our cakes iced in the UK) She declared it and all - customs didn't even want to look at it.

Make sure you do declare it if the country you are travelling to asks about food. It's fine to bring it into a country like NZ - but if you don't tell them they will fine you $200.
