baby meals on airlines

Can anyone tell me what you get in a baby meal on a plane? I don't know whether to go loaded with food, or travel light and use what they give me.

Thanks!

Amy

I didn't think planes provided meals for babies - only for children from 2 years (or if you've bought a seat). How old is your little one?

hana · 02/05/2006 19:19

AmyP - you generally don't get any food for babies on a plane, they only cater for you once you've bought a ticket ( usually from 2) I'd bring a lunch bag full of little things - how old is your baby? They also won't heat up jars or milk ( well no airline I"ve been on ever has) I have flown with by 2 girls at all sorts of stages, it's better to have too much than not enough.

Virgin certainly feed under 2s if you order a meal. Not suitable for babies though :)

hulababy · 02/05/2006 19:35

When we flew with DD when she was under 2 we never got a meal for her. We took own own little picnic lunch for her.

ItalianJob · 02/05/2006 19:37

even if the airline does provide suitable food, still best to take plenty of food in case of any unexpected delays on plane/in departure lounge etc.

Virgin wouldn't feed my under 2 last year.

Thanks everyone. My baby girl is 10 months old. We are flying virgin and we have ordered her a baby meal but the sales person didn't know what it consisted of!

I am very worried about running out of food if we were delayed, so looks like I'll be packing the kitchen sink!

I've ordered a baby meal with BA and it was a savoury jar and a sweet jar.

Now dd is 3 we are obviously paying for her seat and a child meal, i would imagine its a smaller version of the adults.

hulababy · 02/05/2006 21:40

I would imagine a baby meal for a 10 month old would be jars of some form.

I now bring a packed lunch for my 4 year old when we fly - even the kids version or toddlers meal aren't that suitable, often quite sugary as well. I just bring sandwiches, fruit, crackers, juiceboxes, that sort of thing - and a cup with a lid so no spills! ( from experience that one!)

fuzzywuzzy · 05/05/2006 12:05

When I flew with BA (or was it Emirates...can't remember), they handed out jars for babies.
Ask the airline your flying with what they'll serve.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 05/05/2006 12:20

Amy P

I would take your own foodstuffs for your child - have seen people rely on the airline to provide meals for children and they have been let down!. Often as well, childrens meals are not handed out all that long before the meals for adults.

MaryBS · 05/05/2006 12:29

I agree, take your own. Even if they provide baby food, it may not be to your baby's liking.

webwoman05 · 06/05/2006 21:53

Just travelled to and from the States with Virgin with my then 8 month old and they did not offer/provide any food for him - just a kids meal for my 5 year old. Defo take some jars, rice cakes, banana with you. Take enough jars to tide you over until you can get to a local shop on arrival - where are you going to? You could offer baby some of your bread roll that you always get with your own meal too. Babies tend not to eat a huge amount when on planes - I was breastfeeding as well and that really helped the 9 and a half hour flight!! He was more interested in the milk than the food, more for the comfort factor I think.

Good Luck!

when we flew singapore they provided a baby meal even though dd1 did not have a seat. It was a couple of jars. Dd1 was 8 months old at the time so I just took the snacks she likes and a few jars of the stuff she would normally have at home... ended up using their jars and then had some in hand until we could shop or whatever when we got to Australia.
