Child friendly but 'posh' for lunch - south west london

Can anyone recommend a place for lunch in south west london which is suitable for celebratory lunch but which doesn't mind a 1 year old throwing the cutlery around in ? Want it to be extra special as we wanted to go out for dinner but couldn't get a babysitter.

The only place I could think of was the Depot but haven't been in years and was virtually a student so anything looked posh to me - Anyone been recently and can recommend it ??

Balham Kitchen & Bar is nice and we've been there with our 6 month old

Chez Bruce is really nice -- haven't been there with children but I know it claims to be child friendly at lunchtime so you could give them a call and ask?

thanks both - chez bruce looks like it would be fab if it was child friendly.. will call and see (the website doesn't read like a child friendly place IYKWIM but I will check ! Thanks !)... otherwise I know dh would like the thought of chateaubriand at the balham kitchen and bar...

Anymore ideas anyone ? May present them all to dh and get him to pick .... Location wise Wimbledon would be perfect but anywhere accessible from there or clapham would be fine.

Hazellnut Yes, IKWYM I was surprised to see it on a "child friendly" list but given they (presumably) put themselves on the list I reckoned it was at least worth asking. YOu can probably tell on the phone whether they've been struck by total horror at the prospect of an 11-month-old at lunchtime...

Have been to Chez Bruce with a 2 month old but he did stay asleep in his sling throughout lunch... BK&B is nice but quite casual or I have heard Cannizaro House is a lovely setting and child friendly too but not tried it myself...

Why don't you join sitters and go for dinner? Can't say I would fancy dinner with my 1 year old -- although it would be much better than dinner with my 3 year old.

Tutter · 03/05/2006 20:18

depot still ok for babies, but not lovely enough for your meal i think.

agree - join sitters (i just did!) and go somewhere amazing.

Thanks all - we;ve just had a call from MIL who got her weekends confused and can come and look after dd so we are off for dinner ! Will look at cannizaro house though for another occasion !

For next time ... We've been to The Lighthouse in Wimbledon with children of varying shapes and sizes and they've always been charming. Fab food, too. The Avery at Raynes Park are very welcoming too, although it's not as special as The Lighthouse.

fisil · 04/05/2006 13:16

I'd second the Lighthouse. It is definitely special. They bent over backwards to accomodate ds1 (who was 18 months) but we still enjoyed a delicious grown up dinner. My experiences of Cannizaro House have all been bad - uninspired dull food and poor service.

Hazellnut · 04/05/2006 15:34

ooh great thanks - will compile a list and now all I have to do is think of excuses to go.....
