We are going to South of France in a couple of days and chose not to take out the company's insurance which was going to cost about 120 quid for a week. We are fully covered by private medical insurance which includes bringing you home etc in case of an accident or illness and the car is covered by AA type recovery service. We have been to France loads of times but always in gites and have never bothered with insurance but the Keycamp have asked for an insurance number. Just phoned them and they said that if we were satisfied and realised we were not their responsibility, then that would be fine! Feel a bit nervous now. What does everyone else do?

we usually get separate, fairly minimal, travel insurance. Tesco and many of the online cheap insurance companies are usually far cheaper than the travel company's own policy.

We never got insurance before DD was born. DH is an economist and was admanant that it is better to 'self insure' (i.e. bear the risk yourself). However, we got stung once when we had to cancel a holiday because DD had chicken pox. Since children are more likely than adults to contract holiday-cancelling illnesses, I figured that it is a good idea to take out insurance when holidaying with them. However, we shop around and never take out the holiday company's insurance, which is rarely competitive. We insured with Direct Line to go to the South of France for a week earlier this month. I don't remember the premium, but it was much less than £120.

Take out an annual policy for the whole family - try travelinsuranceweb or one of the others recommended on moneysavingexpert.com. It will work out heaps cheaper than £120 and last the whole year.

oxocube, your/dp's credit card might come with travel insurance already. It is a benefit of some credit cards. Check the terms of the card, particularly whether you need to pay for the holiday using the card for the travel insurance to kick in.

\link{http://www.cheepinsurance.co.uk\I used this company - they paid out very quickly when I had to come home early to attend a funeral} Sad

Be careful of "travel insurance" on a credit card. This warning is from the Money saving expert site:

"Don’t trust credit card insurance

There’s a lot of confusion about credit card travel insurance. Often it’s actually only travel accident insurance, which only covers accidents had while in a train, plane or hire car paid for on the card.

A few platinum cards do offer free travel insurance, though the cover levels are usually poor and usually you must pay both the deposit and full holiday cost on the card or you’ll fall foul of their conditions. "

blueshoes · 26/04/2006 10:29

agree with janinlondon. That is why you always need to read the terms and conditions of the card carefully - which I photocopy and take with me on holiday so I know exactly what is covered and how to claim. If it is just travel accident, it is not adequate.

I took out a week's travel insurance for a European country & it cost £28. You don't have to pay vast sums of money but it is definitely worth being insured.
I've been using a great insurance broker for the last 15 years called Hughes & King. Their tel no is: 023 92697421. (No, I don't work for them!)

pashmina · 26/04/2006 11:43

would never go on holiday without cover - I have just bought 15 days in eaurope family of 4 £20.49.

I got this on line from travel-insurance-web.co.uk

We always take separate cover and currently have an annual policy with Wintersports cover. What about cancellation/curtailment, your possessions, clothes etc in case of fire or theft and if one of you is ill accommodation and revised travel for the rest of the family ?

What about if you lose or break something or have belongings stolen?

We have household insurance which covers for accidental damage and 'all risks' for out of teh house. However we also take out holiday insurance. One time we had our car broken into and they stole most of our stuff. We claimed 1/2 on travel insurance and 1/3 on household. Another time DH fell and broke his shoulder ski-ing, he fell onto the video camera. They paid out for medical bills and a new camera without 2 excesses as it was the same claim.

We have an annual policy from difect line, costs about £90 inc winter sports and UK. A lot of annual policies don't cover weekends away in the UK, which this one does. We don't have loads and loads of holidays, but we know we are always covered even camping in a friends garden IYKWIM

GDG · 26/04/2006 12:16

We take out annual travel insurance to cover any trips away that we have. Just paid £42 for family insurance.

crunchie · 26/04/2006 12:33

GDG where do you get it so cheap?

dizzy34 · 26/04/2006 18:19

Hi, Try insureandgo.co.uk, its really cheap. My aunt has just been to rome for four days and luckily took out insurance. she was getting out of the bath and slipped on the tiled floor. she fell backward and hit the toilet, breaking five ribs, as she landed on the floor she broke her are. in the hospital she was struggling to breath, and they xrayed her and her lungs had filled with fluid and blood. she had an op and one of the lungs collasped. The upshot was, she missed her flight and was in hospital for 7 days. She couldnt fly for four weeks cos her lung would burst with cabin pressure. Insurance paid for her to get train to paris, train from paris to london and train from london to liverpool. As i said she was so lucky that she bought travel insurance, and i think it cost her #8.75 from insure and go.
