Rome in June

Wondering if anyone can offer some advice. A friend and I are hoping to book a weekend in Rome in mid-late june. She went years ago but doesn't remember much, I have never been. Is it totally unrealistic to hope for flights and hotel for less that around £400 each?
Last year we went to Prague, the year before we went to Berlin and both times got deals on last minute for around £250-£300 each, but i'm not having much luck this time round.
Also, any info on central places to stay, eat, top sights to check out, travel from airport into city centre would be greatly received.
TIA.

Of course you can get that! It depends on your expectations though. For example, my sister and I did it on the cheap last year; we went for a week and stayed at PlusHostels. It's a campsite, though we stayed in a sort of caravan and they also have cabins. There's a swimming pool and various on-site facilties. Lots of school trips and backpackers (which we were - it was the end of a tour that included Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro) but we had a great time. Easy access to central Rome by bus or Metro.

Definitely go to the Colosseum. We paid 35 euros each for a tour and it was completely worth it - we got to go into the arena and down into the dungeons. It was an Irish company, but I'm afraid I can't remember the name! Loads of tour companies just come up to you in the street, so try to get the best deal.

If you stay 3 nights you can get a apartment which could work out cheaper. Very few of the hotels have pools and none of the cheaper ones which is why I usually like hotels better! We stayed here.
I thought the location excellent - close walk to everything and atmospheric although maybe I'd be closer to the river if I had to do it again because I liked the view.
The underground tour to the Colosseum is great value as you see everything but most importantly skip the huge queues
Most things are easy to walk to but watch opening and closing times for Sunday and Monday. Colosseum is good on Sundays as lots of churches and museums closed etc. Eating out is a joy!

Thankyou both for your responses. I understand it is all subject to our expectations. I should have added we can really only do 2 nights due to dc and work commitments for us both, so apartment probably out of the question. Also wanted to be relatively central, although i understand prices tend to be much steeper. Happy with basic twin room, not bothered about a view but definitely want our own bathroom. But must be clean!!
My sil stayed by the Spanish steps (?) And told me it was amazing.
Tbh, we are both really into food, and we kind of envisage ourselves walking about sightseeing and stopping off to eat at various nice places! Vague plans but we're happy to just go with the flow and enjoy ourselves rather than try to cram stuff in to the point we are just ticking things off a list.
