I m planning to travel for the first time with my ds1 (19 months) and newborn baby ( maybe 3 weeks old) to malaysia via emirates with mil.we have a transit in dubai n the duration in dubai is vary depends on the day n flights from 1 hr to 9 hrs. Is it okay for me with active ds1 and newborn baby to have a long transit so we can relax a bit or the 1 hr transit is better.and another one, do I need to bring my own carseat for ds1 and do i need to take it out for the transit?what i should bring for both my children in the flight n transit?stroller or sling better for the baby?

I've always found one-hour transits in Dubai a nightmare - my first flight is alway late and I have to run like mad to make the connection - not what you want to be doing with tinies in tow. I'd go for a longer stop, so at least everyone can stretch their legs, go to the loo and have a wash etc. Probably wouldn't go for the 9 hours though.

Contact the airline re car seats for ds1 - different ones have different policies. If you're changing planes you'll have to take the car seat off one and and to the next with you, if it's the same plane and just a refuel stop you may not have to.

With a baby that tiny and a toddler my bet would be a sling and a lightweight umbrella stroller - long walks round terminals/to gates with a 19mo will be no fun. There's actually a \link{https://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html\set of wheels} for car seats available in the US that means you wouldn't need the stroller, but I haven't seen them in the UK.

My bet would be to look after the new baby yourself and get MIL to do as much as possible for / with ds1.

(NB will you have time to get the new baby a passport before you leave??)

not sure about the passport though.i've looked from the website that applying a new one in 2 weeks time is possible with extra fees(£70 i think) and you have to make an appointment and go to the office (mine nearest is liverpool)

Think you're cutting it a bit fine myself - and this of course is assuming a lovely smooth birth on the due date - what if the baby's late? Or you need (eg) an emergency cesaerean?

How did you feel immediately after the birth of ds1? Would you really have wanted to queue in a passport office (or, for that matter, fly half way round the world)?

Of course, if your DH can do any or all of these things for you...

yup..me still hoping everything will go smoothly including the labour. last time i had the emergency c-section and i know exactly how it feels.if everything falls apart, i guess i have to resechedule the flight.i am going to malaysia so that my mom can take care of me, with a special treatment after labour (special massage, bath and herbal food) waiting for me there or else i have to do it all by myself here...dh working in other area and only come back home once a week.definitely will ask dh to settle all the baby's travel documents.

aha, hadn't twigged that the journey would result in such good care for you at the other end - sounds like it's worth it to me!

i flew to new york a few weeks ago for college and there was a family withw hat sounds like the same age gapas you will have. they had one of theose cheap pushcahirs with the car seat ontop. baby was in carseat on plane and toddler was on a car seat which they brought on themselves. in the airport the loaded up the pushchair, popped baby ontop, put big car seat onto trolley with bags and put toddler ontop of that. it seemed to work well as there were two of them.
i wouls say sling, at 3 weeks all they do is sleep and feed anyway..

Agree with MrsBadger. 1 hour too short and 9 hours too long.

Is it possible to get a separate seat for ds1? Emirates may let your ds fly without a seat but a 13 hour flight is no joke with a 19-month old on your MIL's lap. Not sure if you are planning to breastfeed but there is nothing more convenient for feeding and soothing baby than bf-ing on a long plane journey. You can probably do babe-in-arms for that flight or if lucky, get a seat with a cot.

Lots of snacks and toys for ds. He will probably have to be allowed to move up and down the aisles or play in a corner for a duration of the flight.
