I have just really enjoyed reading the Venice travel thread and also the thread on sexy bedrooms/weekend breaks. It all sounded fabulous.Envy I think my DH and I are stuck in a rut compared to all you Mumsnetters and may be I need to arrange something!
We live in the south of England and I don't know when or where to book. Maybe Venice without the kids would be good. Please no one suggest Prague - I never want to go to Prague - I lost a baby while DH was there for work with'phone turned off - sorry that sounds worse than it was - it was a much wanted pregnancy following treatment....Sad
I think we should prob leave darling children at home. Please advise on when and where we should go. Thanks in anticipation of help.

Slovenia
Gorgeous cheap and delicious cream cakes :)

chipmonkey · 05/04/2006 22:28

Rome! Deffo!!!!

puff · 05/04/2006 22:31

Venice is very romantic and magical at night - a lovely place to get lost in!

ItalianJob · 06/04/2006 08:24

Venice is gorgeous. I wouldn't leave it much later than his month to go, otherwise it will be hot and overrun with tourists! Elsewhere in Italy - Rome, Florence, Taormina, Amalfi are also gorgeous, but will also be packed out in high season. Barcelona is also fab - loads to see and do. Me and DH went for a cheap weekend in Stockholm last July, and that was great, and not too busy there.

moondog · 06/04/2006 08:27

I'd love to do Venice.
Morocco is fab.
Had the most amazing romantic night ever in fantastic tented garden on the edge of the Sahara, talking to a blue eyed Bedouin (thought I was in a movie)
Only dh's presence ruined it...

Oh,I josh,it was fab!

moondog · 06/04/2006 08:28

Gah,need to learn a few more adjectives don't I?

lapsedrunner · 06/04/2006 10:37

I suspect it will be more the fact you have a weeend away without the kids rather than the final destination that will make it special.

My sugestion is Vienna....but I am biased Grin.

Blackduck · 06/04/2006 10:43

Barcelona.....wonderful, beautiful city and loads to do....

lapsedrunner · 06/04/2006 14:58

ops..weekend, not weeend!

jenni · 06/04/2006 23:11

Thank you so much for all your advice!! Slovenia sounds interesting but where? - excuse my ignorance but I don't know any cities there. Cheap and cream cakes must be good!!!
We can only probably escape for a weekend. I can't keep it a surprise and book DH off work. I am very tempted by Venice and also the other Italian cities. I'm not brilliant at Art galleries and culture but like atmosphere and people watching (and natural beauty). Also adventurous activities. What are the loads to do things in Barcelona please Blackduck?? No one has suggested any where in UK???

Moon dag - can I do Morrocco in a weekend?? I assume not - and the idea is to be romantic with DH I guess!! Lapsedunner -why are you biased for Vienna?? I would worry that the Austrians would be a bit organised and Germanic - I think may be unhurried Italy might suit me??

Thank you all. I feel better already and I am going to look up cheap flights now as you all seem to think we should go abroad. I wonder what I will do with kids.....

Well UK wise,I would nominate Bath or York or Chester.
Bath v v v v romantic.

ItalianJob · 07/04/2006 10:21

If you're not into art galleries/culture, then Florence and Vienna probably won't grab you.

Barcelona - has great shopping, great food and bars, beach, museums, fascinating buildings (especially if you like Gaudi).

In the UK - Whitby, Llangollen, Edinburgh

MrsBadger · 07/04/2006 10:28

hmm - wasn't especially impressed with Bath myself, but may have been immune to its charms having spent previous years living in Canterbury and Oxford.

Our most successful romantic break was in a country hotel in the middle of nowhere - no Culture to distract us into leaving the enormous bed!
(West Stoke House near Chichester in case you fancy it)

peachygirl · 07/04/2006 10:28

in the UK, Brighton, York, London - nothing like walking along the south bank
aboard - not been to masses of places but LOVE Rome - great for kids too, lots to look at, fountains, gladiators etc fantastic ice cream and Lolipops with the Pope on (What more could you ask for?)
Barcelona also great and if you go in the summer you could have a day on the beach too

jenni · 07/04/2006 21:07

Italian Job - I am staggered! I never would have thought of Whitby or LLangollen.
I'm intrigued and starting to also wonder whether with all the problems I will have at present arranging childcare, I shouldn't just go for somewhere in UK now and plan for Rome/Venice/Marrakesh in autumn. I gather that Venice is better by then? So, if I follow Mrs Badger and book a country hotel near Whitby or Llangollen??? Any ideas anyone? What are the fun aspects of these 2 places? Or maybe I should think of York more too?? (We used to live near Bath and now live near Chichester and in-laws are in Brighton) - so I'm not being rude but that is why I'm not following those....
Thanks again

My fingers are crossed for a special weekend break for us in Venice later on in the year, I'm droping lots of hints so hopes some of them register. We could probably manage a long weekend, we havent had a break for sooooo long.

jenkel · 07/04/2006 21:20

Oh, before kids we had a lovely romantic break in Sorrento, stunning scenery - Amalfi Coast, Capri, Mount Vesivus.

ItalianJob · 07/04/2006 22:23

with both Whitby and Llangollen I'm thinking the generally scenic setting, rather than specifics. Whitby is romantic in a gothic sort of way, (part of Dracula is set there!), Llangollen in a lush welsh rolling hills sort of way.

jenni · 10/04/2006 22:11

I have lots of super ideas now so many thanks. I just need to try and get something organised. I think I will try Whitby or Llangollen for a weekend and Venice, Sorrento (I will have to get a map out - I am so ignorant!) Rome, Marrakesh or somewhere in Italy for the autumn. Many thanks everyone!
I would still value advice on a place to stay in UK near these romantic scenic places if anyone has any ideas..... I see there is a youth hostel in Whitby but that may not be the most romantic.....

Duke of York b & b is nice in Whitby, has a pub/restaurant that does very nice meals, and has a fab location at the bottom of the steps to the Abbey.

oops · 10/04/2006 22:17

cheltenham or exeter-or one of the other hotels in the alias chain.
Romantic weekend away- perfect!!
\link{http://www.aliashotels.com/index_flash.php\lovely funky hotels, very resonable price but a bit special}

Corrin · 11/04/2006 21:04

If you want to sty in this country...special places to stay byt Alistair Sawday's have some really lovely places...actually he does do foreign as well worth a look....

jenni · 12/04/2006 22:42

Thank you Corrin - I had a lovely time browsing the Alastair Sawday web site that you sent - excellent advice. I also got an idea from the web site for somewhere to stay with kids in Scotland this summer - some of the places on the west coast look fab. Still nowhere really romantic for Whitby or Llangollen though ... OOps - I'm not keen on Alias hotels. They are run by the same people as Luxury Family Hotels and I had a really bad experience with the manager etc at Fowey Hall and would never give any of them custom again! As a way of apology they offered me a special deal of a complimentary night and when I went to book it, they retracted....
Has anyone stayed at Bovey Castle? - I am about to look up the web site - I'm told it is fab..
