Mousses Lefkas lovers

desperatehousewife · 30/03/2006 13:40

Off here for much needed holiday in may. Got the guidebook - not a great deal of info in it for lefkas and seached archives here.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend places to go/places to eat, things to do. I have a 4yr old boy who is booked into the creche in the afternoons (not sure if i should have booked mornings instead?)

thanks for any tips!
DHW

hi
it's quite a sleepy place, at least in May, part of its charm for me! You should find a detailed folder of info in your room though wiht suggested trips/maps/recommended restaurants/places to see.
1)Nice to go down along the coast - see the fishing boats, swim, have lunch at one of the many tavernas (v fresh fish!)
2) go on a marine boat trip - there's one run by a couple of english guys, marine biologists who really know their stuff- show you octopus, star-fish etc in on board-tank (freshly caught but they put them back, our 4 yr old loved this!), give you chance to snorkel, lovely lunch - contact details are at Mousses
3)visit lefkas town - harbour, shops, reasonable restuarants, castle
4) walk along the beach & see all the windmills
5) wander from Mousses down to the nearby taverna on the beach - quite good food
6) go diving/snorkelling
7) there's horseriding nr Mousses, also walking distance to a couple of shops inc supermarket
8) drive off into the hills - lovely drives, great for animal hunting - goats, cows
9) hang out in the bar in the evening (within earshot of yr ds, that's the great beauty of Mousses), chatting to others, having dinner, whatever, there's a weekly BBQ there too

HTH - we loved it so much we're going back this yr again!

btw the crech was great, in fact whole hol was only let down was truly appalling customer service from Thomson who now own ST..

CountessDracula · 31/03/2006 18:14

sorry just noticed this

Meganisi is lovely for a day trip
Agios Nikitas is great, the swimming there is really good on the right day. The restaurant right on the beach (stand looking back up the road from the beach and is on your left, built up a bit) is great for dinner.
The square in Lefkas Town is fab for a coffee or drink while the kids run around.
Porto Katsiki is great, about an hour's drive
The beach below Poros is great too

CountessDracula · 31/03/2006 18:16

June (we're being naughty & skivving school)
Are you off there again too CD?

desperatehousewife · 31/03/2006 18:48

mischeif and cd thank you so much - really appreciate this. Sleepy is perfect, just the sort of place we're looking for. Did simply holiday last may in turkey which was very very sucessful (although thomson flight reminded me it was just another package holiday!)

Loved Lefkas but was a struggle to find a decent restaurant. The only decent one (apart from the italian ones on the square) was behind the square and I can't remember the name. Basically if you stand with back to the square and the main walkway in front of you going from left to right look for a tiny lane a about 11 o'clock going away from the square on the other side of the walkway - there are a couple of restaurant signs pointing down this lane. You go down it and then take first (or maybe 2nd?) left down another lane (restaurant sign here as well). This takes you to a junction that has two big restaurants on it. Can't be more than a 90 second walk from the square. The first restaurant you come to is the good one, and does lots of steak and international food and is really good (but you have to sit inside); the one on the other side of the junctions is Greek and has a beautiful garden area, but the food is really ropey - stick with Mousaka if you go here.
Both restaurants are quite well known and I think both are highlighted on the map you get with your welcome pack. Such a shame Simon isn't going to be around as he'd be able to identify them for you in an instant. Mind you, you will know when you find them 'cos all the other mousses guests will also be there!!!

MissChief · 06/04/2006 14:53

that's helpful, we failed to find this one first time round!
There are a couple of quite good taverans on the coast a few miles south of Mousses (sorry, can't remember name of village but agian marked on map) - one particularly good for fresh fish & seafood..

Cporrin - I would suggest you phone. I couldn't find my holiday with simply on the net, and thought it had gone, but when I phoned there was still availability - and I got it a lot cheaper. I did check Mousses, as that ws my preferred destination, but it books up very quick. I'm going to Aloni, in Crete, which is similar.

desperatehousewife · 10/04/2006 10:35

oooh i wanted aloni in crete - it looks gorgeous. but didn't have availability when i wanted it.

Corrin · 10/04/2006 11:17

Thanks got quote for Aloni...was really good until DH told me he had a meeting on that day :(

Have boon looking in to others now...only had Castor Villa free...and that was £1,798 without childcare...ouch

pashmina · 10/04/2006 12:40

Desperatehousewife - will let you know what its like, got good reviews from other mnrs. If you look at their own web site it looks more attractive, I fon't think the photos did it justice.

We went to periyali villas, in Zakynthos last year, and it was excellent. Very quiet, but very pretty. we were there with somebody else who had been to Mousses, and they felt Periyali was better accommodation.

Corrin · 10/04/2006 17:50

Thanks Pashmina...have now found a quote for a Sunsail (see my other thread) for £100 more but is half board....might go for that..
