We are thinking about going in early September. People say it is nice but has anyone been with small children?

where are you staying? in a hotel or villa?

Mazzystar · 23/03/2006 13:52

was thinking about self-catering - there are some apartments available in port soller or a couple of small houses on edge of the town. we're keen not to rent a car - get the train from palma etc. would that be realistic do you think?

honestly- you would need a car there. Its so cut off from the rest of the island by the mountains, plus although it is a beautiful resort, there isnt much for children there and the beach in the resort itself isnt fantastic.

If i was to go there on holiday, i would definetly hire a car, but i dont think that i would go there with little ones. if you need any more info let me know.

What time of year?

We went to Port Soller a few years ago, when DS1 was 14 months or so. It was December. Which was out of season, so it sucked a bit.

We didn't bother with a car, and it was fine - got a taxi to Palma, then a bus to Soller (wanted a train, but they were flaky), then a tram to Port Soller.

The food wasn't great, but then, a lot of places were closed, because it was out of season.

tiredemma · 23/03/2006 14:03

in the summer though NQC- the two beaches there are crap tbh, and without a car, it would be an ordeal just to go to a beach.

i would go there for a daytrip, but wouldnt really stay there

catgirl · 23/03/2006 14:05

well I hope it's good as we are going in May for a week! Have rented an appt with a shared pool and there is a beach - we have low standards - so long as there is sand and no dog poo we don't mind. Not planning on hiring a car, although think we found out you can hire them locally for a day or two - we just want to chill, get some warmth and get the train into Palma a couple of times. Our DS is 3 by the way.

catgirl · 23/03/2006 14:06

why exactly are the beaches crap?

tiredemma · 23/03/2006 14:13

quite "muddy", the water was quite murky also from the fishing boats constantly coming in and out of the harbour. But the local council are building a new promenade and making a more artifical beach, so maybe it will be better. I only said that the beach was crap because compared to other beaches on the island it is

catgirl · 23/03/2006 14:18

thanks - we like watching boats come in and out! So sounds OK to me - and 'muddy' is heaven to my 3 year old! As we aren't hiring a car we can't compare to other beaches! Smile

tiredemma · 23/03/2006 14:20

you can actually go out on the fishing boats on a trip, excellent fun.

try, if you can to go to valldemossa for the day/afternoon. its a very traditional mallorquin town, beautiful with lots of lovely little restaurants/coffee shops.

tiredemma · 23/03/2006 14:22

by the way- because it was so cut off from the rest of the island from the mountains- it has still kept an "old charm" about it which is lovely.

i dont want you to think that i hate the resort- i dont its lovely. i just love the east coast more!!

Mazzystar · 23/03/2006 15:21

we are hoping to get somewhere with a garden or outdoor space and maybe a pool. we live right by the beach so its not our top priority - is it a nice place just to poke about and eat nice food?

tiredemma - where else would you recommend on majorca?

OP posts:
Enid · 23/03/2006 15:52

soller is lovely! and near deia which is even more lovely. we went in Feb and it was gorge.

you can get a taxi from Palma for not v much you know

Enid · 23/03/2006 15:53

agree about the car

not the east coast though

elliott · 23/03/2006 15:53

Enid (or anyone) any accommodation recommendations?

Mazzystar · 23/03/2006 15:54

Enid, there are some gorgeous lokking places to stay in Deia. If we went there would we be stranded without a car, or would you know if there is public transport between Deia and Soller?

OP posts:
Enid · 23/03/2006 15:55

there is a lovely little railway between deia and soller and taxis are cheapish

why dont you want to hire a car? (the roads are mentally treacherous btw Wink)

Enid · 23/03/2006 15:56

I am afraid I have no recommendations unless you are feeling rich with no children around as we stayed at La Residencia Blush

elliott · 23/03/2006 15:57

Well feeling rich yes-ish, but has to be with children Envy Though I have done a deal with some friends to let me and dh have a weekend awya for my 40th...

Mazzystar · 23/03/2006 15:58

would prefer to spend the money on a nicer place to stay and like the idea of travelling light and being unencumbered. also very taken with the idea of the little wooden train from palma to soller.

better to stay in soller or deia, d'you think?

OP posts:
Enid · 23/03/2006 15:59

I dont think they take kids

but its a lovely place to stay for a 40th

restaurants both a bit overly posh though

but loads of lovely places to eat nearby, gorgeous, simple rooms with terraces, all very tasteful and just in the most lovely setting

elliott · 23/03/2006 15:59

Is deia on the coast? Or is it that very swanky place up in the mountains?

Enid · 23/03/2006 15:59

deia is 'posher' and stunning

soller more of a town (with incidnetly the most gorge patisserie)

Enid · 23/03/2006 16:00

it is on the coast but not much of a beach

it is more mountainous and I think v trendy

elliott · 23/03/2006 16:01

mmm, sounds good. I WAS thinking of Paris though.
Better add it to my list of 'places I will go when I think of a way to farm out the ds's for longer than 24 hours'. In about 2016.
