Funky [but not too pricey] restaurants in Brighton

DH and I will be going to Brighton for the day and staying in a hotel on Saturday night celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary. We'll be in 'wooly hat and jeans' mode as we'll have been enjoying the pier, lanes shopping etc during the day and won't be getting changed before we head to get some dinner. Can anyone suggest a funky but reasonably priced restaurant? Anything in a italian / modern english type vein would be great. We'll be leaving DS with his grandparents!

Alfresco on the beach (next to old derilict pier) is good, honest, simple Italian food and has the best view in Brighton - literally on the beach...although if at night, probably won't see anything!

Terre a Terre has been voted best restuarant many times is modern, funky, vegetarian (not a nut rissole in sight) it's very unique, delicious, beautifully presented clever food. Not too cheap though. It's in East Street near the sea. Good, buzzy restaurant, nice staff. Good organic ales too.

Due South (also on the beach, under one of the arches, but between new and old pier) is fantastic - again not cheap but bloody good food and is small, intimate and great views.

What about that one the was on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, the soul food one?

Mama Cherie's soul food shack or something. You'll probably need to book that though.

Saucy in Hove has the kind of modern british food you're after and the kind of atmosphere too, cheaper than due south. It's on church road in hove - probably 30 mins walk along seafront so you might want to get a cab back.

Hotel du vin is lovely too - but you definitely have to book and isn't quite as laid back

I'd say Terre a Terre too. Really, really good food. Have fun!
