Where to go in October?

Name change as if you know me in RL it's pretty obvious who I am.

So, DH and I have two weeks off coming up, from 1 October. We've been really lucky over the last few years and have been to some great places, but are totally stuck for inspiration this time.

We like interesting places, but are happy to read books. If we're to go abroad, we like to see something of the country, and definitely don't like nightclubs or lager-fuelled fun (although we do like a drink). Scenery is always appreciated, especially if it involves hills/mountains/lakes/rivers. We would prefer day flights, and happy to negotiate on temperature. Also very happy to stay in the UK.

Places we have enjoyed include Bordeaux, Ireland road trip, Dalyan in Turkey, Acharavi in Corfu, Washington/Oregon road trip, Bruges and camping in Dorset. Friends in RL have recommended Paphos, Luxor and the Norfolk Broads.

It's just the two of us, and we can afford up to 800pp for two weeks b&b.

I hope I don't sound like I'm bragging, we are really grateful that we can afford the time and money to have a holiday. We've been working really hard for the last few months and are really looking forward to going away somewhere and want to make the most of it.

Thank you!

Oooh go to Vietnam!! Best place I've ever been to - travelled south to north from Saigon to Hanoi and it was just wonderful! If you're after scenery/hills/mountains/sheer geography it's just amazing - trust me, spend some time in Nha Trang and you may never come home! Grin

Ah just seen the £800 budget - was a long time ago that I went so no idea about cost of flights (I got a return ticket for about £350 back in the day) but it's ridiculously cheap out there - or it was!

I would not be too keen on North Africa (inc. Tunisia) these days.

No restrictions from the Foreign office though.

I've been to Botswana in October, unbelievably fantastic.

tigermaj · 22/09/2012 19:00

I would recommend kotor in Montenegro. Scenery is fantastic and the walled city itself is fabulous. Great location for exploring and relaxing

Bratislava? can then take train to the Tatra mountains. it is stunning scenery, cheap hotels (some with good reason!), and (IMO) great food and beer.

also easy to visit Krakow, or Vienna, or Budapest or Prague for a day or two - all within a train journey.

and Bratislava is a lovely city to visit.

grovel, Lyme's great but my parents live in the next village, so not so much of a holiday for us!

mrsunshine, oohps, didn't realise there was a travel forum on here Blush. So I was being unreasonable after all!! Grin

Seriously everyone thanks for all the suggestions, DH is now building a spreadsheet to weigh up all the options... If I'm back tomorrow asking if it's unreasonable that DH spent all Saturday night building a bloody spreadsheet to decide where we go on holiday, please shoot me!

I did an amazing three country holiday to Israel (Jerusalem is definitely one of those places to see before you die places), the dead sea, Jordan (Petra, another before you die place) and Egypt, where I dived. However I am not sure how easy that would be these days due to security. And it might be more than £800.

Morocco?

strandednomore · 22/09/2012 19:07

or or or Boston/New England...
Oh sorry flights would probably push the price up too much.

pugglefan · 22/09/2012 19:34

Was going to suggest Tampa in Florida, but not sure how much the flights are. Had a great holiday there 3 years ago, and plan to go again when dcs are a little older.

Evening. We're going to move this thread to our Travel topic now. We're sure the regulars there will have even more great tips.

neverquitesure · 22/09/2012 19:44

Do you ski? I've always fancied Zermatt off-season (although never yet done it!) You might be lucky and get a deal if you don't mind basic accommodation and traveling via coach.

Realistically there'll only be a few hours decent skiing per day (unless you are very good) so plenty of time to explore further down the resort.

Fluffy1234 · 22/09/2012 21:31

As you said you like beautiful scenery especially mountains I would recommend Cape Town. It may cost more then £800 but is good value when you are there.
